James Cameron Addresses Marvel and DCU Movies and Which He Would Direct

James Cameron has his hands full with his Avatar franchise, but he also knows which comic book movie he would have made in another life.

“I’m not going to diss the Marvel or the DC Universes,” is how James Cameron begins his comments about whether he would consider directing his own superhero movie. While plenty of big directors have taken a shot at the world of comic-book franchises, James Cameron has no intention of joining their ranks, and instead professed his love for the movies while addressing the possibility of stepping behind the camera for a future MCU or DCU outing.

One of the questions every director is asked at some point is how likely it is that they will play a part in what is arguably the biggest genre in the world. While being interviewed by ComicBook.com, Cameron addressed this very query and had a definite answer for those interested, as well as an interesting perspective on how comic book movies elevate the industry. He said:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Look, what happens is the more people are doing visual effects around and obviously the big comic book superhero films have been driving the sheer volume of the industry, right? The rising tide of technique raises everybody together. It gives you a higher quality of artists, you’ve got more tools and plug ins and code. You’ve got more talented people writing code and simulations and all that sort of thing out there. I have no interest in directing a comic book film. I was very interested in Spider-Man, but that was a unique thing I had, a personal love of Spiderman and then that ground has been so well served by other people.”

Will James Cameron Hand Over His Avatar Sequels To Other Directors?

 20th Century Studios

There is little doubt that Avatar is James Cameron’s baby. However, the director has a pretty ambitious plan for the franchise’s future with at least three more huge sequels to follow Avatar: The Way of Water. For this reason, he has already contemplated the possibility of having to hand over the reins to other directors or face making nothing but Avatar movies for the rest of his career. He previously said:

“The Avatar films themselves are kind of all-consuming. I’ve got some other things I’m developing as well that are exciting. I think eventually over time – I don’t know if that’s after three or after four – I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know.”

With Avatar: The Way of Water already gaining outstanding reviews ahead of its release next week, and a projected opening weekend up with the largest of the year, there is very little chance that Disney will not be fully behind James Cameron’s long-term plans. Whatever predictions were already out there for the Avatar sequel, there has been nothing to dampen the anticipation of the movie’s release, and it is possible that when the money starts rolling in, Avatar: The Way of Water could exceed even its stratospheric expectation.
