James Gunn Says He Had To Return To Tell Rocket’s Story In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

James Gunn may have a lot on his plate with the DCU, but he says he had to conclude the Guardians story in a way that only he could do.

James Gunn may be currently running headlong into the world of DC and certainly has a tough gig on his hands with that one, but his mind is also very much on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 over at Marvel Studios. In a lengthy interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn revealed the biggest reason he wanted to come back to complete his trilogy and how he couldn’t have left without telling one character’s story. He said:

“One of the reasons why I came back to [make] this movie was because I felt like I needed to tell Rocket’s story. I would’ve been very sad not to complete the trilogy for many reasons, but I just feel very connected to Rocket. I feel like nobody would be able to tell his full story if it wasn’t me. To me, Rocket has always been the secret protagonist of the Guardians movies. From the beginning, it has been rooted in who he is as a character. I think he exemplifies a lot of the traits of all the Guardians. They’ve had all these traumas, and it brings them together. I just think that his is more extreme than others.”

Everyone has their favorite Guardian, but Rocket is certainly top of many people’s lists, whether it’s for his foul-mouthed rants, gung-ho attitude, or his endearing relationship with Groot. Now fans will find out everything about the weapon-loving raccoon, and it’s a story Gunn has been waiting to reveal.

“He was just fine being an animal, and he was transformed into something else he didn’t want to be. I think that transformation itself was extremely painful, but I also think it made him feel incredibly alienated from everyone else. In Vol. 3, we learn a lot about his past — where he came from, who he is, and what he’s been through. It’s been a difficult road for the little animal.”

Will Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 Be the Best of the Trilogy?

James Gunn wants to make sure that he leaves Marvel Studios on a high and following the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special; that is something that seems very possible. While the movie promises to include the usual mix of action and humor, a strong emotional thread will run through the heart of the story. Gunn previously said:

“Vol. 3 has a lot of the fun and the goofy stuff of Guardians, but it’s also incredibly emotional. It’s the end of the story for this group of Guardians, so there was a lot of emotion around it. It was very serious a lot of the time. The actors were all pushing themselves a lot, especially Chris Pratt. It was heavy.”

Whether Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 can deliver everything Gunn has promised is something we will all find out in May when the movie hits theaters. While much of Phase 5 is set to be focussed on the Multiverse, the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel seems to be mostly a self-contained adventure like the other Guardians movies, which may well be one of the film’s best attributes.
