Michigan cooperating with NCAA amid probe into potential rules violations

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel confirmed Friday that the school has received a draft of a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA regarding several rules violations.

“Yesterday, we received draft allegations from the NCAA regarding our football program,” Manuel said, according to The Athletic’s Austin Meek. “We have cooperated and will continue to cooperate with this investigation. Out of respect to the NCAA’s enforcement process, we will not offer further comments.”

The Wolverines are reportedly facing four Level II violations related to using too many coaches during practice sessions, contact with two recruits during the COVID-19 dead period, and watching players work out on a video feed, sources told Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh is also facing a Level I violation, considered the most serious by the NCAA, for failing to cooperate with investigators as part of its investigation into the Level II allegations, Wetzel reports.

The delivery of the draft opened a 90-day window on the case before an official Notice of Allegations is filed, according to Wetzel.

The allegations against Harbaugh and Michigan arrive shortly after the coach reasserted his commitment to remaining with the program.

“As I stated in December, while no one knows what the future holds, I expect that I will be enthusiastically coaching Michigan in 2023,” he said in a statement Thursday.

Harbaugh had been linked to coaching openings with the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos before clearing the air about his future earlier in the week.

The Michigan alum has led his alma mater to a 74-25 record in eight seasons, with back-to-back appearances in the College Football Playoff.
