The family adventures are ending for The Goldbergs at ABC. With the show currently in the midst of its 10th season, it has been reported (via Variety) that the long-running sitcom will not be renewed for season 11. Its current season will now serve as the last with the season 10 finale, scheduled to air in May, now serving as the series finale. The show reaching its end comes after losing two major characters over the past two years, as George Segal passed away in 2021 followed by the controversial exit of Jeff Garlin months later over allegations of inappropriate behavior.

First debuting in 2013, The Goldbergs is set in the 1980s and is loosely based on the childhood of series creator Adam F. Goldberg. Segal and Garlin had both been main characters playing grandfather Albert and father Murray, respectively, with the starring cast also including Wendi McLendon-Covey (Beverly), Sean Giambrone (Adam), Troy Gentile (Barry), an Hayley Orrantia (Erica). The final season also stars Lainey Lewis (AJ Michalka) an Sam Lerner (Geoff Schwartz).

A wide variety of notable guest stars have also been feature on the hit sitcom over the years. Its 80s setting has allowed for stars of the era to appear, such as Hulk Hogan playing himself and Robert Englund playing Freddy Krueger. Some of the other guest stars inclue “Weird Al” Yankovic, Chuck Norris, Charlie Sheen, Kirstie Alley, Rick Moranis, John Oates, David Hasselhoff, Rick Springfield, and Lea Thompson, among many others.

It was announced ahead of season 10 that Jeff Garlin had left because of allegations he was acting inappropriately behind the scenes. The season 10 opener began with the reveal that his character, Murray, had died, his empty chair serving as a symbol of his former presence. Narrator Patton Oswalt noted that the family would “find a way to continue on together,” the hope from ABC that the series would maintain its popularity after losing another main character. Series showrunners Alex Barnow and Chris Bishop previously spoke about their enthusiasm for the show moving forward.

“Everybody is incredibly enthusiastic about doing this thing,” the pair told THR about returning for season 10. “We’ve gotten to the point where everyone feels lucky. No shows do 10 years. I think everybody appreciates what we have and I think its legacy at this point is doing 200 episodes in all. It’s such a big part of our lives. I really enjoy what we do. I think the cast enjoys what they do. I know the crew is incredibly enthusiastic about it. Like any family, any business that’s been around for 10 years, there are highs and lows. It’s a very long season. But I have to say my conversations with Wendi and the rest of the cast have been enormously positive and grateful for everything we have.”

The series finale of The Goldbergs will air in May.
