It’s going to be one season and done for the ABC series Alaska Daily. Per Deadline, it’s been revealed that the network has canceled the show with no plans to develop a second season. The news comes after the first season struggled to pick up in the ratings from its October 2022 debut to when the finale aired in March. For those watching, the show was pretty well received, pulling in an 86% audience score at Rotten Tomatoes with a 74% approval rating. Series star Hilary Swank would also be nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role in the series. But despite the positive reception, there just weren’t enough people watching for ABC to commit to season 2.
The series, developed for ABC by Tom McCarthy, was inspired by the Anchorage Daily News and ProPublica article series called Lawless: Sexual Violence in Alaska, which was first published in 2019. The coverage was spearheaded by reporter Kyle Hopkins, who served as an executive producer alongside Anchorage Daily News president Ryan Binkley for the TV show. Other exec producers include McCarthy, Swank, Bert Salke, Melissa Wells, and Peter Elkoff.

Alaska Daily followed Swank as Eileen Fitzgerald, a journalist from New York who relocates to Alaska where she takes a job for a local newspaper in Anchorage. Along with fellow reporter Roz Friendly (Grace Dove), Eileen reports on missing and murdered Indigenous women in the state, coming to uncover some of the city’s darkest secrets. In addition to Swank and Dove, the show starred Jeff Perry, Meredith Holzman, Matt Malloy, Pablo Castelblanco, Ami Park, and Craig Frank.
There were other shows that were axed at ABC alongside Alaska Daily. The Company You Keep, which starred Milo Ventimiglia, was also canceled after a single season, having aired from February to May of this year. Also canceled was the series Big Sky, which recently wrapped up its third season, dubbed Big Sky: Deadly Trails. Meanwhile, it’s been reported that the network drama series Rookie: Feds remains on the bubble.

Swank recently spoke about how she appreciated playing a strong-willed woman in Alaska Daily. As seen in the show, Eileen was determined to find answers no matter what it took, and that was something that even inspired the actress who played her.
“It’s in her bones to investigate the truth,” Swank told Collider. “She is a truth seeker, and she demands that from people. As we evolve, I just find that deeply inspiring. I think the world, and especially our country right now, is tired of being hoodwinked. There’s no more space for that. That’s gonna be something that people appreciate as well.”
She added, “This woman is a truth seeker. She’s an advocate. She wants to see that justice prevails. All of those things are very beautiful to me. I like that she doesn’t suffer fools. We usually see men in these roles, so it’s really nice to have something that I can step into that’s just brave.”
