SpongeBob SquarePants Spinoff The Patrick Star Show Is Happening at Nickelodeon

The Patrick Star Show is officially a go at Nickelodeon. The ViacomCBS-owned network has just greenlit 13 episodes of a SpongeBob SquarePants spinoff series following SpongeBob’s longtime best pal, Patrick Star. Bill Fagerbakke, who has been voicing the character since 1999, will reprise the role for the series, portraying a younger version of Patrick who hosts a TV program and lives with his family.

“Nickelodeon is diving deeper into Bikini Bottom to give fans a look at our lovable young adult Patrick Star and his entire family with a sitcom only he could imagine up,” Ramsey Naito, President of Nickelodeon Animation, said in a statement. “This second original spinoff allows us to expand our reach, tell new stories and connect with our audience around the world who continue to love these characters.”

Per Variety, Nickelodeon head Brian Robbins also describes the network’s plans for SpongeBob moving forward, comparing the expansion of the franchise to “a mini-Marvel Universe.” He also reveals that other SpongeBob characters will be given their own spinoff movies or TV shows in the vein of Patrick.

“There is seemingly an endless amount of stories with this franchise,” Robbins said. “You’ll see movies with spinoff characters. I think you’ll see more shows like Patrick, and some other characters, and some different live stuff. It’s kind of endless when you think about the cast.”

New characters introduced for The Patrick Star Show include Cecil Star (Tom Wilson), Patrick’s happy-go-lucky father; Bunny Star (Cree Summer) as his “kooky oddball” mother; Squidina Star (Jill Talley) as Patrick’s 8-year-old sister and the “executive producer” of the sea star’s show; and GrandPat Star (Dana Snyder) as Patrick’s grandfather, described as the most intelligent member of the Star family.

Meanwhile, SpongeBob also stars in his own prequel spinoff series that just debuted with the launch of Paramount+. Called Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, the series follows a 10-year-old SpongeBob attending a summer sleepaway camp. Patrick Star is also featured along with younger versions of other major characters like Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Sandy Cheeks, Plankton, and Mrs. Puff. The first six episodes are now streaming on Paramount+, though Nickelodeon has already ordered 26 total episodes so far.

SpongeBob’s newest movie, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, has also just premiered on Paramount+ along with Kamp Koral. Originally set for a theatrical release, the movie made its streaming premiere in the United States with the launch of ViacomCBS’s new streaming service. The movie is fully animated in stylized CGI rather than the traditional 2D look of the show and reveals the story of how SpongeBob met his pet snail, Gary.

Nickelodeon is also turning to some of their other popular franchises for new content in the works at Paramount+. This includes a CG-animated Rugrats reboot which recently had a first look trailer released. Live-action adaptations of Dora the Explorer and The Fairly OddParents are also in development.

The Patrick Star Show is set to air on Nickelodeon sometime this summer, but an official debut date hasn’t been revealed. This news comes to us from TVLine.
