Prey Has Been Nominated for Outstanding TV Movie at the Emmys

The Predator prequel Prey has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. As straight-to-streaming releases for feature films are eligible for award nominations for TV movies, Prey has been nominated for the Outstanding Television Movie category. It should be noted that most of the other nominations are also straight-to-streaming releases, as they include Hocus Pocus 2 for Disney+, Fire Island for Hulu, and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story for The Roku Channel. The only nomination for a movie that aired on broadcast television is for NBC’s Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas.

Prey also garnered a handful of other nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards. This includes a nom for director Dan Trachtenberg for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie; Trachtenberg and Patrick Aison for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie; Angela M. Catanzaro and Claudia Castello for Outstanding Picture Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie; Sarah Schachner for Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special; and a final nomination for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special.

These would be the latest award nominations for Prey, which has already earned many others up to this point. The film won three awards at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, including Best Streaming Premiere Film, Best Costume Design, and Best Creature FX. Prey was also nominated for Best Movie Made for Television at the Critics’ Choice Awards while lead star Amber Midthunder was up for Best Actress. The movie also won a Sound Editing award at the Golden Reel Awards.

While it’s wonderful for fans to see Prey garnering Emmy nominations, it’s also a reminder that the movie wasn’t released in theaters. When the film was released on Hulu, many fans were expressing their disappointment that they didn’t get to watch Prey on the big screen, feeling it was worthy of a theatrical release. That may not be wrong, as the film did set a new record for Hulu as the most-watched premiere across all film and television titles. The reviews were also very strong, as Prey has a score of 93% on the Tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes.

Prey was directed by Dan Trachtenberg and scripted by Patrick Aison, though the two crafted the story together. The film is set in 1719 and follows Amber Midthunder as Naru, a Comanche woman hoping to protect herself and her tribe from an extra-terrestrial hunter who’s targeted them for sport. Along with Midthunder, the film also stars Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegro, Michelle Thrush, Stormee Kipp, Julian Black Antelope, and Bennett Taylor.

Perhaps with all of this success for Prey, the film could end up getting a direct sequel, though as of now, the future of the Predator franchise is unclear. You can stream Prey on Hulu, and you can see the full list of nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards at Emmys.com.
