  • Despite the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the story of The Crown’s final season remains largely unchanged, but the impact of her death is reflected in a powerful and respectful episode.

The Crown will be finally delivering one of the most anticipated moments during its upcoming sixth and final season. The death of Lady Diana, Princess of Wales it is one of the most significant events in the history of the United Kingdom, and of the modern world, so there is a lot of expectation in the way in which the acclaimed Netflix series will portray that tragic moment.

During a recent participation on Edinburgh TV Festival (via Deadline), producers Andy Harries and Suzanne Mackie spoke about how the series will address the death of Diana and how important it was for them to respectful:

“The show might be big and noisy, but we’re not. We’re thoughtful people and we’re sensitive people. There were very careful, long conversations about how we were going to do it. The audience will judge it in the end, but I think it’s been delicately, thoughtfully recreated. Elizabeth Debicki is an extraordinary actress, and she was so thoughtful and considerate. She loved Diana. There’s a huge amount of respect from us all, I hope that’s evident.”

Debicki joined the cast in season five to portray Lady Di, while in season four the character was played by Emma Corrin, who will soon be joining the MCU in Deadpool 3. One of the most acclaimed aspects of the Netflix show is the casting choices and how so many actors have been able to amazingly portrayed such popular historical figures.

Diana was recently the star of another popular production, Pablo Larrain’s Spencer, with Kristen Stewart playing the part, offering a very different interpretation of Lady Di. But the character has been taken to the screen several times with other stars behind the role like Naomi Watts or Genevieve O’Reilly.

Netflix

Just a few months before the release of The Crown fifth season, Queen Elizabeth II passed away, completely shocking the world. After that, fans have been wondering the Netflix show should go on to tell all of her life, since she’s the main focus of the story.

However, for now the next season will stay as the last one, and it seems that not much has been changed since the Queen’s passing according to Harries and Mackie:

“The passing of Her Majesty impacted on us all… It didn’t change [the story] fundamentally, but it did change it in a sense. When you see it, I think you will know what I mean. It’s a very powerful film and a very respectful episode.”

The new installment of the series will also star Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Phillip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Dominic West as Prince Charles, Ed McVey and Rufus Kampa as Prince William, and Meg Bellamy as his girlfriend Kate Middleton. For now, the final season of The Crown doesn’t have a release date, but is expected to arrive later this year.
