Dreamworks Conjures Up First Look at Eli Roth’s Teen Horror Animated Series Fright Krewe

Eli Roth is turning his horror eye to the world of animation with a new series Fright Krewe. Coming from Dreamworks, the series is created by Roth and author James Frey, but rather than aiming for Roth’s usual all-out gore-filled R-rated terror, this time around the project is for “older kids.”

There is no way to deny that Dreamworks have become a force to be reckoned with thanks to franchises like How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda and Shrek, but they have never fully embraced anything in the horror genre. So, it seems that is where Roth comes in, but despite his usually sadistic and brutal movie offerings, this time around it appears that he will be toning down his gruesome violence.

Dreamworks have released a first look at the title card of the series, as well as the central group of the story, which carried the synopsis of:

“An ancient prophecy and a Voodoo Queen put misfit teens in charge of saving New Orleans from the biggest demonic threat it’s faced in almost two centuries. But, honestly? Saving the world might be easier than becoming friends.”

The series will clearly have a foot firmly in the occult, and looks like it will also tap into the ever-popular teenage-led storytelling that has become a huge crowd pleaser in the likes of Stranger Things, Ghostbusters: Afterlife and more. Fright Krewe could certainly be arriving at just the right time to deliver something special that could provide both Dreamworks and Roth with a new and intriguing path.

Eli Roth Is Currently Working on His Borderlands Movie, and Thanksgiving.

Eliot Roth made his name on some nasty horror movies like Hostel and Cabin Fever, and his new foray into teen animation doesn’t mean he has turned his back on the darker side of the genre. Years after his fake trailer for Thanksgiving appeared as part of the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse, Roth is bringing the movie to cinemas for real in a full length feature film boasting an ensemble cast of Patrick Dempsey, Addison Rae, Gina Gershon, Tim Dillon and Rick Hoffman. The movie kicked off production back in March, but as yet there have been no updates on exactly when we can expect to see it arrive.

In the meantime, Roth has also been working on his long awaited and much-delayed adaptation of video game series Borderlands. The movie version of the open-world shooter has been in the works for years, and even though it originally wrapped shooting in 2021 there is still not release date set for the film’s release. This seems to be in part due to some reshoots that are being directed by Deadpool helmer Tim Miller after test screenings last year turned up some issues.

Eli Roth is certainly pushing new boundaries with his new ventures and it all seems to start with the release of 10 part series Fright Krewe, which is expected to arrive on Peacock and Hulu later in 2023. Expect a trailer arriving soon.
