The upcoming season comes with new leadership as Halley Feiffer takes on the roles of both writer and showrunner, succeeding Ryan Murphy. FX has recently dropped a teaser trailer that offers a sneak peek into what viewers can expect from this unsettling season. The teaser hints at a central theme revolving around motherhood, but with a terrifying twist.

“In American Horror Story: Delicate, after multiple failed attempts of IVF, actress Anna Victoria Alcott wants nothing more than to start a family,” the official synopsis reads. “As the buzz around her recent film grows, she fears that something may be targeting her – and her pursuit of motherhood. AHS: Delicate Draws Inspiration from Ridley Scott’s Alien

Unlike its earlier seasons, which spun entirely original narratives, AHS: Delicate draws its inspiration from the novel “Delicate Condition” by Danielle Valentine. The novel has been heralded as a modern feminist reinterpretation of the classic “Rosemary’s Baby.”

Yet, while comparisons to the latter honor author Valentine, her creative spark was ignited by the film Alien. The symbiotic relationship portrayed in the film resonated deeply with Valentine’s understanding of pregnancy, where the fetus draws resources from the mother’s body to flourish independently.

“I was really much more inspired by Alien, which I think will also give readers an idea of where I’m taking this.”

“It’s really a movie about pregnancy, but it’s been written by a man who doesn’t understand that that’s what he’s writing about,” she continued. “It’s what happens when a guy thinks, ‘What’s the scariest possible thing I can come up with?’ And it’s this idea of, what if you’re growing this creature inside of you and it’s using your resources to get bigger and you can’t control it? It has a mind of its own, and then one day it just bursts out of you in this gruesome, bloody mess. When I first saw it when I was a kid, it didn’t occur to me that that’s basically what pregnancy is, but at six months pregnant, I’m like, ‘Oh, wow! That’s just a pregnancy story without the pregnancy.’ That was the seed right there.”

Due to ongoing strikes, American Horror Story: Delicate will be divided into two parts, with the first part scheduled to premiere on September 20th.
