Netflix Unveils the Trailer for Sonic Prime Season 3

Summary

  • Sonic Prime returns with its highly anticipated third season, which will likely be the last, and will consist of a total of 24 episodes.
  • The animated series follows Sonic as he travels through parallel realities to reunite with old friends and allies after a devastating battle against Dr. Eggman.
  • Exciting Sonic projects are in the works, including the third film, which will feature the appearance of Shadow, and a spinoff series exclusively on Paramount+ starring Idris Elba as Knuckles.

After the great success of the first two seasons, Sonic returns to the Netflix screen with the third installment of Sonic Prime, the animated series that the streaming platform has developed together with SEGA.

Premiering in 2022, the first season of the show had 8 episodes that were very well received by fans of the acclaimed video game. The second season, also of 8 episodes, premiered in July 2023, and it was quickly confirmed that this would not be the end for the blue speedster’s latest adaptation. However, it is believed that the story of Sonic Prime will be told over a total of 24 episodes, which would suggest that the third season could also be the last.

In Sonic Prime, the Blue Blur travels through parallel realities to reunite old friends and allies after an epic battle against Dr. Eggman ends in disaster, unleashing absolute chaos across the multiverse.

During the most recent edition of Geeked Week, Netflix presented an exclusive look at the new season of the series, which at the moment does not have a release date but will arrive next year on the streaming platform:

Sonic Prime stars Deven Mack as Sonic, Ashleigh Ball as Tails/Tails Nine, Brian Drummond as Mr. Dr. Eggman/Dr. Done It, Adam Nurada as Knuckles, Shannon Chen-Kent as Amy/Rusty Rose, Kazumi Evans as Rouge/Rebel Rouge, Ian Hanlin as Shadow/Big the Cat, Vincent Tong as Renegade Knucks/Dr. Babble/Dr. Don’t/Dr. Deep, and Valkyrae as Squad Commander Red. The series was created by Joe Kelley, Duncan Rouleau, Steven T. Seagle, and Joe Casey.

Paramount Pictures

In addition to the return of the acclaimed animated series, there are other big Sonic-related projects in development. On the one hand, after the enormous success achieved with the first two films, Paramount Pictures began shooting the third part in September, although with a catch. Due to the actors’ strike that was ongoing at the time, they were only able to work in scenes that did not require the presence of their main stars. So surely, now that the conflict between the actors union and the studios has come to an end, filming will resume with the actors’ presence to meet its release date set for December 20, 2024.

At the moment, no details of the film’s plot have been confirmed, but the appearance of Shadow in the post-credits scene of the second movie indicates that the character will be present in the next installment. So it’s possible that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will feature a big battle between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles against Shadow, while several rumors indicate that Metal Sonic could also make his debut in the movie.

But the Sonic universe will also expand to the small screen with its first spinoff. Idris Elba will return as Knuckles the Echidna, in his own animated series, coming exclusively to Paramount+ in 2024. Joining Elba will be Adam Pally as Wade Whipple, and Cary Elwes as “Pistol” Pete Whipple. The series will take place after the events of Sonic 2, serving as a bridge to Sonic 3.
