Summary
- Early reactions to “The Nun II” suggest that the sequel is intense, scary, and delivers on the expectations of fans of The Conjuring universe.
- The performances of Taissa Farmiga and Jonas Bloquet are praised, with a particular highlight being the film’s final act.

Valak’s return is only days away and fans of The Conjuring universe don’t have much longer to wait as The Nun II baddie adjusts its sinister, black tunic and prepares to unleash its horrors in theaters on Friday, September 8. Taissa Farmiga is back as Sister Irene alongside the demonic Valak (Bonnie Aarons). So, what should fans expect when it comes to these characters facing off again? Well, the social media embargo has officially been lifted. And according to the early reactions, there’s a lot for cinephiles to be excited about — it’s looking scary good!
The founder of Nightmarish Conjurings, Shannon McGrew, said the sequel “goes so hard,” via X, formerly Twitter. Check out @shannon_mcgrew’s full post below:
McGrew also writes that one scene in particular is sure to make The Conjuring universe’s loyal followers “scream with joy/horror.” And fans shouldn’t leave their respective theaters too soon. According to McGrew, there’s something special waiting for the ever-so-patient theatergoers as the credits roll.
Collider’s own Perri Nemiroff was pleased with both Farmiga and Jonas Bloquet’s performances. Like Farmiga, Bloquet returns to the sequel, and he reprises his role as Frenchie. No spoilers here, but The Conjuring universe’s fans already know that Frenchie is possessed. And Nemiroff was particularly excited about what happens in the film’s final act. Nemiroff wrote on X, formerly Twitter:
“The eerie atmosphere is hugely effective and there’s a bunch of strong set pieces — the magazine rack scene featured in the trailer is great, but there’s a certain something in the third act that wound up being the favorite for me. (Willing to bet you’ll be able to guess what it is.)”

Germain Lussier, a senior writer for Gizmodo, wasn’t as impressed with the end of the movie as some of the other social media users were. But still found much to enjoy. @GermainLussier wrote via X:
Directed by Michael Chaves, with a screenplay written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and Akela Cooper, The Nun II is scheduled to be theatrically released on September 8, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The Nun II is forecast to make approximately $30 million over its opening weekend. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 also opens on September 8, and The Equalizer 3 will undoubtedly be a factor at the box office during its second weekend of release. And Barbie marches ever closer to its one-week IMAX engagement on September 22.
