Fields dedicates TNF win to Bears legend Butkus: ‘This one’s for him’

Justin Fields and D.J. Moore dedicated the Chicago Bears’ first win of the season Thursday night to the late Dick Butkus – one of the greatest players in franchise history.

“Condolences to his family,” Fields said after the 40-20 win over the Washington Commanders, according to Chris Bumbaca of USA Today. “It just means a lot, tonight, getting the win – first win in a long time. So, Bears legend, he’ll never be forgotten. We played for him tonight. So, this one’s for him tonight.”

Fields added that the Bears’ players didn’t know about Butkus’ death until a moment of silence was held before kickoff. The legendary linebacker died in his sleep earlier Thursday. He was 80.

“We actually found out about it when we saw it on the screen,” Fields said. “We were like, ‘What?’”

Moore, who had a career night with eight catches for 230 yards and three touchdowns, also showed love to Butkus after the game.

The win snapped a 14-game losing streak for the Bears, who had also allowed at least 25 points in each of those losses, an all-time high.

Fields completed just 51.7% of his passes against the Commanders but tossed 282 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. It was his first appearance without a pick since last season’s Week 16.
