The MCU Continues to Explore the Madness of the Multiverse

Disney+

Since the first season of the Disney+ series, Loki, the multiverse has been fully unleashed upon the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The ramifications of this have taken over Marvel stories on both the big and small screen, with the likes of Spider-Man: No Way Home bringing variants of the superhero and his enemies, including Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s respective web-slingers as well as Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin and Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus, to the MCU.

Following the nostalgic Spider-Man sequel, Doctor Strange follow-up Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees Benedict Cumberbatch’s sorcerer leaping across the multiverse to protect America Chavez, a teenager capable of traveling the multiverse, from Wanda Maximoff who is hunting her down in order to get reunite with her children.

The multiverse continues to dominate the MCU into Phase Five, with the likes of Loki season two and The Marvels further exploring and expanding the concept.

The multiverse is expected to take center stage in the upcoming sequel Deadpool 3, which will see Ryan Reynolds’s Merc With a Mouth team-up with Wolverine, who is set to be played once again by Hugh Jackman. While details of Deadpool 3 remain largely under wraps, images from set have revealed that Deadpool and Wolverine will at one stage find themselves in the Fox universe. Which it seems is now collapsing. This lends itself well to the theory that the threequel will find the pair embarking on a road trip across the multiverse, with further theories claiming that the TVA (Time Variance Authority) will be involved.

Alongside these projects, the multiverse is expected to collide even more so with the upcoming Avengers sequels, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.

The first two seasons of Loki are now available to stream on Disney+, with The Marvels out now in theaters. Deadpool 3 meanwhile is scheduled to be released on July 26, 2024.
