Pedro Pascal Credits Buffy the Vampire Slayer for ‘Saving’ His Acting Career

Summary

  • Pedro Pascal’s rise to stardom took over 20 years, starting with a breakthrough role on
    Buffy the Vampire Slayer
    .
  • Pascal’s time on the acclaimed series is unforgettable to him, including details like sharing ice cream with Sarah Michelle Gellar.
  • Despite early struggles, Pascal credits a residual check from
    Buffy
for keeping him in Hollywood and not giving up on acting.

Though he truly shot to stardom with The Mandalorian, the rise of Pedro Pascal to the top of Hollywood’s A-list took more than 20 years to accomplish, and if it weren’t for his role on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, there’s a good chance that The Fantastic Four star would have given up. Pascal, who will portray Reed Richards in the upcoming MCU reboot, once had less than $7 in his bank account, and was considering abandoning his acting pursuits in favor of something a little more stable. Thankfully, he hung on, and now finds himself in a position few actors get to experience.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight after his SAG Award win for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series, which he won thanks to his work on The Last of Us, Pascal commented on how important the win was to him considering that voting came from within the acting community. It was then that he revealed the only way he was able to stay in Hollywood during those early years as a young actor was thanks to a residual check from his role as Eddie on the season 4 premiere of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1999. Check out Pascal’s comments below.

“My entry level lasted about 15 years. We’re talking about being able to see a doctor, getting sick, having surgery, paying my rent. I had less than $7 in my bank account and a residual from
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
showed up and saved the day and literally is the reason I was able to stay in [Hollywood] and not give up.”

Pedro Pascal Remembers “Everything” About His Time on Buffy the Vampire Slayer

While some actors who have been around for a while tend to forget things about their early roles in Hollywood, such is not the case with Pedro Pascal. The 48-year-old leading man was just 24 when he appeared in the acclaimed series, and says he remembers every single detail about his time starring opposite Sarah Michelle Gellar. Speaking with ET Online in 2023, he commented, “I could give you step by step, every detail,” and proved it by reminiscing about the time she gave him ice cream.

“I remember she had ice cream in her trailer, and she gave me some. She went back to her trailer, she got me some ice cream, and she shared — ’cause it was a night shoot, it was in the middle of the night, and we were on the UCLA campus. They hadn’t built their college sets yet.”

He would go on to mention the kindness of Gellar, revealing that she taught him a trick or two when it comes to acting.

“She was incredibly kind. She taught me how to use a sandbag to hit my mark. She was the best.”
