One of Zendaya’s most talked-about movies of the year, Challengers, is finally heading to streaming. The romantic sports drama co-starring Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor made waves at the box office and garnered praise from critics for its intense storyline and dizzying performances. If you still haven’t seen it, or you’re eager to revisit possibly the hottest movie of 2024, Challengers will begin streaming on Prime Video on September 19.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino, Challengers takes viewers into the intoxicating, high-pressure world of competitive tennis through three perspectives. It follows the story of Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), a former tennis prodigy turned coach, who finds herself caught up in a love triangle with her husband, Art (Faist), and his former best friend, Patrick (O’Connor). After suffering a tennis injury, Tashi’s career is thrown off track, and she devotes herself to turning Art into the grand-slam champion she always wanted to be. The plot thickens as the three characters come face-to-face in a high-stakes tournament that could change their lives forever.
With such a complex navigation of relationships and personal conflict, Challengers became a film even non-fans of the sport enjoy. It received rave reviews from critics, who particularly praised Zendaya for her ability to convey strength and vulnerability at the same time. Challengers also performed well at the box office, grossing $94 million worldwide. It holds an 88% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Zendaya’s Upcoming Projects To Look Forward To
With over half of 2024 having passed, Zendaya continues to stack up an impressive slate of new and upcoming movies. Challengers is just one of her many successes in 2024. Her performance in Dune: Part Two has been widely acclaimed, with the movie itself becoming a landmark achievement at the box office. In the sci-fi epic directed by Denis Villeneuve, Zendaya reprises her role as Chani, adding nuance to a visually stunning and conceptually arresting movie.
Looking ahead, Zendaya has a bunch of other exciting projects lined up. She will star alongside Robert Pattinson in The Drama, a romantic movie about a couple’s wedding day gone wrong. Additionally, Zendaya is currently in the process of finalizing a deal with Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures for Spider-Man 4, where she will return as MJ and continue her fan-favorite role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Another highly anticipated project is the third season of Euphoria, where Zendaya plays Rue Bennett. The HBO drama has gained a massive following for its raw and unflinching portrayal of teenage life, with co-stars Maude Apatow, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Barbie Ferreira, Hunter Schafer, and Sydney Sweeney, earning praise for their standout roles as well. As for Luca Guadagnino, the Daniel Craig-starring Queer, which has been acquired by A24, is something to look forward to later this year.
