A new sci-fi apocalyptic film, Elevation, starring Anthony Mackie, fails to meet expectations after receiving a disappointing Rotten Tomatoes score as it hits theaters this weekend. The film follows a single father venturing into dangerous territory in order to save his child, where giant monsters now roam planet Earth below a certain elevation. Elevation feels like an amalgamation of several recent alien horror films, but according to the latest critic reviews, it fails to reach the heights of the genre.
With 21 reviews counted, Elevation has garnered a 52% Rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes, just below the required percentage to get a Fresh rating (but well below Certified Fresh). Although the trailer teased a film from the producers of A Quiet Place and The Purge, it seems Elevation fails to meet expectations of either genre film. Of course, Elevation is notably a lower-budget affair than those two projects, but the new film borrows a considerable amount from A Quiet Place when it comes to the plot. Elevation has the MCU star battle monstrous creatures that only appear for a specific reason, this time being land elevation rather than noise.
For some reviewers, the film felt inspired by War of the Worlds from Steven Spielberg, a film starring Tom Cruise about an alien invasion that feels eerily similar to Elevation. That said, it appears the new film tries to separate itself with a small scale storyline and fewer monsters, centering on a personal story about Anthony Mackie‘s protagonist as well as Morena Baccarin, who plays a scientist looking to end the monster invasion. The film also stars Maddie Hasson, Danny Boyd Jr, Ian Hummel, Shauna Earp, James Anthony Perez, Dave Malkoff, Drexel Malkoff, Mike Hickman Gregg S. Perry, and Dalila Orozco. Elevation Treads Familiar Territory
Despite the negative reviews, the official trailer for Elevation does a good job portraying the post-apocalyptic world it takes place in. Like A Quiet Place, the monsters are completely CGI, and look bigger and meaner than most post-apocalyptic creatures on film. Moreover, although Mackie plays a father whose personal story is the centerpiece, it seems Elevation is also primarily concerned with the mysterious origins of the monsters and how to stop them. It certainly seems like they are aliens invading some other planet, and can only inexplicably roam earth below 8,000 feet above sea level, but that is for the audience to find out themselves.

Anthony Mackie has been throwing shade at one of his fellow Avengers again.
There is certainly a world where Elevation finds an audience after it hits streaming post-theatrical run. Of course, it’s unclear which service that would potentially be, but there has rarely ever been a film more suited to Netflix or a similar platform. Vertical is keen on getting Elevation on as many theater screens as possible, so it is possible that people support the film before it reaches home video. A 52% critic score often doesn’t translate to a totally negative audience rating, which could be much higher on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter.
