The Chicago Cubs are determined to trade one of Cody Bellinger or Seiya Suzuki, a source told Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
The New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners, and Houston Astros have all checked in with the Cubs on a potential Bellinger trade, a source told 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine.
Bellinger, 29, declined to exercise his opt-out clause after posting a .751 OPS (111 OPS+) in 130 games. He’s set to make $27.5 million in 2025 and holds a $25-million player option for 2026.
The Cubs reportedly aren’t looking to eat money in a potential Bellinger trade. Discussions are expected to heat up once free-agent superstar Juan Soto signs his new contract, Levine reports.
Suzuki, meanwhile, is under contract with the Cubs for two years with a $19-million annual salary. The 30-year-old posted new career highs in home runs (21), OPS (.848) and fWAR (3.6) in 2024.
Chicago’s desire to move one of its outfielders likely stems from wanting to allocate payroll elsewhere while also opening up playing time for the talented youngsters in the upper levels of its minor-league system.
The Cubs finished third in the NL Central with a 83-79 record in 2024.
