‘Shrek 5’ Animation Style Claim Has Fans Crying “Ugly Sonic”

Shrek

fans were celebrating when it was announced that a fifth installment was finally on the way, but having been given a quick glimpse at what they can expect from the new movie, they have already picked fault with one aspect of the new film. As Dreamworks shared the first look at Shrek 5

with an official casting video announcement, there is something slightly different about everyone’s favorite ogre that has riled a lot of people to the point that some have urged Dreamworks to just cancel the belated sequel now.

Though that may seem dramatic for such a small piece of footage to cause this level of backlash, it only takes a minor change to a tried-and-tested formula to send fans into meltdown mode. In this case, it is a slight change in the animation style that fans are not happy about. Some have even suggested that a petition similar to that of the “Ugly Sonic” variety needs to happen in order to get Dreamworks to bring back the exact same style of the first four movies before Shrek 5 hits cinemas next Christmas.

A mean lord exiles fairytale creatures to the swamp of an ogre, who must go on a quest and rescue a princess in order to get his land back.

The video brought with it some unexpected casting news, as Zendaya joins franchise veterans Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, playing Shrek’s daughter. This should really have been the biggest talking point, but instead the video has led to a wave of skepticism that only social media can nurture and develop into full-blown outrage in record time. Although there are currently no plot details or further cast announced, fans had been expecting more of the hilarious familiarity of the franchise to be present in the new movie. Now, there is a surprising air of disappointment about the project, all because of this minor tweak.

@SammyFabelmen led the charge, posting on X, “Just saw the new animation for Shrek 5 just cancel the whole thing at this point.” @Doofinc_ followed this up by adding, “The animation looks so off.” Meanwhile, @thehorrorgoth suggested some direct action to make Dreamworks sit up and pay attention.

Can we bully Dreamworks to change the Shrek 5 animation like we did to Paramount to change Sonic’s animation?

‘Shrek 5’ Is Doing the One Thing That Long-Term Fans Hate

The Shrek franchise is one of the biggest and most successful animated franchises in history. The original 2001 film parodied traditional fairy tales, spinning out a story that added some twists to classic characters and delivering a huge box office as a result. Three sequels, a spinoff Puss in Boots franchise, and several shorts later, the visual style of the Shrek franchise is cemented in the consciousness of audiences.

Obviously, the entertainment industry has changed a lot in the 15 years since Shrek Forever After premiered in 2010. Animation styles and the technology available have also changed many times over. Bold and dynamic animated features such as Sony’s Spider-Verse movies, and the various styles utilized in anthology series such as Prime Video’s Secret Level, have become a huge success. As much as fans never want to see changes made to a classic and beloved character’s appearance, things do and will change, and sometimes you just have to roll with the punches.

One thing that needs to be noted is that this is just a teaser for the movie, and one that is being released almost two years before the movie hits cinemas in December 2026. For this reason, it is possible that this is just something that has been very quickly put together and is not finished off in the same way as the movie will be. Or, Dreamworks could see the reaction and make sure that the movie is not finished off in the same way. Whatever the truth, it would be foolish for anyone to write of Shrek 5 being a huge box office success next year.
