Although one could easily dismiss it as just another video game adaptation, Arcane has now emerged as one of Netflix’s most popular animated series and is loved by many. Initially announced at the League of Legends anniversary celebrations in 2019, the first season of the show premiered in November 2021. Arcane was renewed for a second season the same month, with Season 2 taking to screens in November 2024.
Created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee, Arcane has firmly cemented itself in the history of television with an impressive accomplishment on Rotten Tomatoes. In a feat that only a handful of works have achieved, both season one and two of Arcane have a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience ratings, although not perfect, follow closely. Season 1 of Arcane holds a 94% by viewers, while Season 2 lags slightly behind with 84%. However, from an overall perspective, what Arcane has achieved is nothing less than impressive.

What Is ‘Arcane’ About?
Netflix
Arcane is an extremely well-executed adaptation of one of the biggest and most popular video games, League of Legends. Set in a world that brings together sci-fi, fantasy, and steampunk, Arcane’s primary plot revolves around conflict between the wealthy, utopian city of Piltover and the oppressed underworld, Zaun. At the center of the narrative are two orphaned sisters, Vi and Powder, who later goes on to become Jinx. The sisters, separated by tragedy, fight for opposing sides of the conflict, with Vi forming an alliance with an enforcer of Piltover to stop the escalating violence and Powder, AKA Jinx, siding with a ruthless crime lord to become an unpredictable and volatile force.
Across its two seasons, Arcane depicts how tensions build and powerful figures in both sects struggle for control. In the midst of it, the lives of many are affected, with relationships broken beyond repair. Arcane combines personal struggle, loss, grief and political clashes to create a gripping, emotionally-charged and visually stunning narrative. The series ended on a mixed note, with Jinx seemingly dead after having sacrificed herself for her sister, Vi. However, the death is never confirmed, leaving the entire storyline wrapped in a sense of ambiguity.
What Do Critics and Viewers Think of ‘Arcane’?
If the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes are anything to go by, both critics and audiences are massive fans of the series. The relationships between characters enable the narrative to remain grounded in its way, thus having a true impact on its audiences, and the stunning animations of the series have been credited for making Arcane as successful as it is. Commenting on the series, critic Rafael Motamayor of IGN movies said:
“It’s the individual characters where the series excels, pairing a stellar voice cast with stunning animated acting. With fascinating worldbuilding, larger-scale action, and animation that continues to push boundaries, this is a more-than-worthy follow-up.”

Many viewers share the same sentiments as critics. Audiences have credited the creative team for taking the time to truly develop its characters, giving the series an emotional intensity that many animated series lack. Writing on Rotten Tomatoes, R G said:
“There’s a lot to watch on television these days, but far a few animated films give this feeling that the creators really cared. The emotional intensity of the show, the character development, the style, the music, all in first, that the director and its team really gave a poop. So, yes, definitely five stars.”
However, unlike critics who agreed that both seasons of Arcane were well-executed and thus deserving of being perfectly-scored, some viewers were not too happy with the conclusion of the series. Some carry the opinion that the pacing of Season 2 was off, leaving the season feeling rushed and underdeveloped. Dimitry L wrote:
“Season two lacks a story at all. Why they do what they do? How is it possible what is happening? No answers, no explanations, we are getting an LSD trip instead of a story. Very sad, half of 250 million spent on a very beautiful picture with an absolutely horrible (aka abscent) plot.”
Will There Be an ‘Arcane’ Season 3?
Despite not having an entirely conclusive ending, Arcane Season 2 has been confirmed as the series’ final installment. As such, the show will not have a third season. However, this is not to say that the League of Legends animated universe will end with the conclusion of Arcane.

The ambiguous ending and unanswered questions of Arcane allude to the intention of showrunners and creators to keep the universe going, perhaps through spinoffs. Confirming this, co-creator of the series, Christian Linke, told Screen Rant that Arcane “is just the first one,” and that some future projects will be “continuations of character stories from Arcane.”
“Arcane is just the first one. We’re working on a bunch of new projects, a bunch of new stories from across the different regions and characters of our IP, and some of them are actually continuations of character stories from Arcane. So, definitely, there are some character stories that we want to continue. So, really, Arcane is the true first. This is the first rite that we had to survive and figure out, “Can we do this?” And now, we can kind of dream bigger, which is really awesome.”
Arcane Seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Netflix.
