Watch Mikey Madison turn ‘SpongeBob Squarepants’ into an HBO drama for ‘SNL’

Mikey Madison transformed SpongeBob SquarePants into an HBO-style drama on Saturday Night Live. Check it out below.

The Oscar-winning actress hosted the show on Saturday (March 29) alongside musical guest, country singer Morgan Wallen.

During the episode, she teamed up with comedy group Please Don’t Destroy for a dramatised take on Spongebob Squarepants.

It saw Madison attend her SNL writer’s meeting dressed as Squidward, brainstorming a live-action TV adaptation of the iconic Nickelodeon show that insisted was really about “a friend group navigating life in their early 20s.”

The group of writers – comprised of comedians Martin Herlihy, John Higgins and Ben Marshall – were less than convinced, arguing it’s more about “a funny sponge”, and that developing a TV show would take “three years”.

The sketch then cut to the future to reveal that they had spent years on the project, culminating in an HBO-style adaptation that saw Madison’s Squidward romantically involved with Spongebob having uncomfortable conversations about money. Another plotline saw Mr. Krabs discover that his daughter Pearl was pregnant, and meanwhile Patrick was diagnosed with a mystery health condition. Check it out below.

Elsewhere on this week’s episode, Wallen performed ‘I’m The Problem’ – the title track from his upcoming album – and ‘Just In Case’.

The country singer made headlines after the show aired when he was seen abruptly walking off the stage prior to the credits ending, which some viewers have interpreted as a snub towards the cast.

During the credit roll – which usually sees the SNL cast celebrate the end of the show with both host and musical guest – Wallen was shown taking his leave off-camera after only greeting Madison goodbye.

Wallen – who is based in Nashville, Tennessee – then posted an Instagram Story with a picture of his private jet and a caption that read “Get me to God’s country”.

Elsewhere, Jack Black will be returning as host for the first time in 20 years for SNL‘s next episode, and will be joined by musical guests Elton John and Brandi Carlile.

The actor revealed that it feels “cray cray” and “very exciting” to be hosting the NBC show again, adding he is “having lots of nightmares and night terrors and also fond memories flooding back.”

As for Madison, earlier this month, she thanked the sex worker community in her acceptance speech after winning Best Actress at the Oscars for her role in Anora.
