Alabama Shakes have shared their first new song in 10 years – check it out below.
The band – comprised of Brittany Howard, Heath Fogg, and Zac Cockrell – went on hiatus back in 2018, and now, they’re back with their first new music in a decade.
‘Another Life’ was released on Friday (August 29), and sees the band venture further into 1960s British soul and rock. In an interview with NPR, Howard compares the track to Tom Jones.
“When I wrote ‘Another Life,’ I was thinking about all the lives we carry,” Howard said of the track. “The ones we’re living right now, the ones that slipped away because of different choices, the what ifs, the what wasn’t meant to be, the goodbyes, and the chance encounters that feel divine.
“This song is about those threads and how they stretch across time and space, connecting every version of who we are. It’s about letting them come together, letting them harmonize, and realizing that goodbye isn’t really goodbye. It’s more like I’ll see you later. A collective story that never stops unfolding. I’m glad we opened this door into this reality of us making music together again.”

Since their hiatus, Howard has released two solo studio albums: 2019’s ‘Jaime‘ and 2023’s ‘What Now‘.
In December, the band reunited for the first time in over seven years at a surprise show in their native Alabama. Howard had been slated to perform the gig as a solo act, but decided to surprise guests by inviting her Alabama Shakes bandmates to the stage.
Then, in January, they shared some photos of themselves in the studio, telling fans they were “working on some exciting stuff!”
They are currently continuing as a three-piece, with former drummer Steve Johnson absent. He was arrested on charges of child abuse in March 2021, but was then dismissed in December 2021.
The band are currently in the middle of their North American reunion tour. You can see a full list of remaining dates below, and find tickets here.
