Benjamin de Almeida Is Ready To Grow Beyond Social Media

41

Benjamin de Almeida, also known as BENOFTHEWEEK, has used his comedy chops to create a dynamic social media presence. From reaching 12 million TikTok followers to judging this year’s viral Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest, it’s safe to say his hard work has paid off! We caught up with de Almeidan to unearth his social media interests,  fashion faves, and what’s in store for his fans in the future.

How did you get your start as a content creator—and did you ever anticipate gaining such a large following?
I was just posting pretty much anything on my YouTube channel. There was a point in time when I was posting Minecraft videos and then I was like, “Nope, I’m gonna do album reviews.” I just never anticipated anything I made to blow up, but sometimes it does. It always catches me by surprise.

Is there a specific moment when you realized your career course changed?
I made this TikTok where I put a can of beans in the microwave, and edited it so it looked like it blew my house up. It got so big in 2019 when the app was still a baby. People to this day come up to me saying, “You were like the first TikTok I ever saw.” That’s a horrible introduction to the app, but thanks, I guess!

You judged the viral Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest! How do you feel about new ones popping up online?
It’s so cool seeing so many other ones pop up. It’s such a fun and original idea that my friend Anthony (@AnthPo) came up with. Some of them really have striking lookalikes that they find, it’s scary.

Have you had any challenges in your career, if so how were you able to overcome them?
It’s probably from being bottlenecked by being the only person that’s doing everything in my content—all my editing, planning, and filming.

Have you considered getting someone to edit and plan your videos?
I will do it til I die, it is a hill I will die on. It’s called YouTube, not “WeTube.”

What are some of your favorite brands and shopping destinations?
Anything [from] Dover Street Market, I love perusing through there. Also, Online Ceramics. I love a good witty T-shirt, but they do a lot of other cool stuff, too.

Any dream collabs?
Acne Studios, Miu Miu, and Prada!

If you could create a capsule collection based on your brand, what would it look like?
I love the idea of uniforms. Whether it is a school uniform, a work uniform, or a pseudo-military uniform. It’s fun having something that looks so official, but a silly take on it.

Where do you see your career in 5 years? Any new projects you’re anticipating?
I love to act and write. I’ve spent so long waiting for someone to throw me a bone. Next year, I just want to start in whatever capacity that takes. Whether that means making something myself—which I want to do—but there are so many things, like movie making or writing a book. I’d like to branch out.
