Disney+ has benched John Stamos by canceling his basketball series Big Shot.

The buzzer is sounding on Big Shot at Disney+. Deadline reports that the basketball dramedy series has officially been canceled after two seasons. The first season of the show, which stars John Stamos as a temperamental basketball coach, debuted on Disney+ in 2021 and was renewed a few months later. Season 2 premiered back in October 2022, and the future of the series has since remained in question. Unfortunately for the fans, it seems Disney has ultimately passed on moving forward with season 3.

Big Shot was created by David E. Kelley, Dean Lorey, and Brad Garrett. It follows Stamos as Marvyn Korn, a basketball coach who works with a girls’ basketball team at a California school. Along with Stamos, the series stars Jessalyn Gilsig, Richard Robichaux, Sophia Mitri Schloss, Nell Verlaque, Iana Le, Monique Green, Tisha Eve Custudio, Cricket Wampler, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Sara Echeagaray.

“This show represents everything Disney is to me – family, inclusion, and unity,” Stamos said in a statement back when season 2 was ordered. “But at its core, Big Shot is about guts and heart, and that is what Disney+ demonstrated by giving us a second season. I am sending lots of love to the critics and fans that got up on their feet and cheered for us from the sidelines. I’m so grateful to continue to play Coach Korn, a man who learns to let go of pre-conceived judgments and learns from an incredible group of women, helping him to evolve and grow. And yet, he still has so much more to learn…thankfully he’ll get that chance in season 2.”

Clearly hopeful that a season 3 was eventual, Kelley added, “We are thrilled to be returning with Big Shot. The show has touched so many hearts -John Stamos’ brilliance especially is Coach Marvyn Korn- we look forward to season two and beyond.”

Big Shot Only Had a Season 2 Because of John Stamos

Stamos previously said in an L.A. Times interview that he had personally intervened when it looked like Big Shot was going to get canceled after the first season. Taking inspiration from his character, Stamos says he did all he could to save the show, and that included personally reaching out to then-Walt Disney TV Chairman Peter Rice to plead his case. It worked at the time, as Stamos says.

“I poured my heart out about what the show meant to me,” he explained. “Plus, here’s a show with a 98% diverse female cast. In its DNA it’s about female empowerment. We need these kind of shows.”

He continued, “That was on a Thursday; Friday I get this call from the studio, and I didn’t answer because I knew it was going to be bad. And they called [co-creators] David Kelley and Dean Lorey and said, ‘Sorry, it’s done. We tried.’ And then an hour later they called back and said, ‘Hold on. Apparently John Stamos took a walk with Peter Rice? And Peter told us to try to find the money for it.’”
