Following some outcry over her plans for Great American Family’s Christmas movies, Candace Cameron Bure has offered a response with a statement posted online. Taking to Instagram, Bure posted a lengthy statement dismissing the suggestion that she is bigoted toward the LGBTQ+ community. Bure suggests that her comments were misconstrued by the media and that she means no ill will whatsoever toward anyone else.
“All of you know me, know beyond question that I have great love and affection for all people,” Bure writes. “It absolutely breaks my heart that anyone would ever think I intentionally would want to offend and hurt anyone. It saddens me that the media is often seeking to divide us, even around a subject as comforting and merry as Christmas movies.”

The Full House star goes on to describe herself as a devoted Christian who strongly believes that “every human being bears the image of God.” Specifically in response to the media who’s been “using this opportunity to fan flames of conflict in hate” to those who are attacking Bure online, she says she has nothing but love for them anyway.
The actress and producer directly addressed what she said about focusing on “traditional marriages” with the stories she’s telling with new Christmas movies at Great American Family. Bure points out that there are people of “all ethnicities and identities” that have and will continue to contribute to the network, stressing that she’s not prejudiced toward anyone. As for the stories told with the movies she produces through her pact with GAF, Bure says that it’s simply a matter of finding a place on television that offers solely “faith-based” content, not meant as a slight to anyone outside of traditional Christian families.
“I have long wanted to find a home for more faith-based programming,” Bure notes. “I am grateful to be an integral part of a young and growing network. I had also expressed in my interview, which was not included, that people of all ethnicities and identities have and will continue to contribute to the network in great ways both in front of and behind the camera, which I encourage and fully support.”
She added, “I’ve never been interested in proselytizing through my storytelling, but in celebrating God’s greatness in our lives through the stories I tell.”

The controversy began with an interview with the Wall Street Journal where Bure spoke about her plans to focus on telling stories on Great American Family that feature traditional Christian values. Though Hallmark will debut a gay holiday movie on the network this year, Bure confirmed that there were no plans at this time for similar movies to be made at GAF. She also said she was aware of the trends in 2022 but that the idea was to keep “traditional marriage” at the core. That resulted in some criticism online as well as from celebrities like JoJo Siwa and Hilarie Burton.
“Now they’re just openly admitting their bigotry,” Burton said on Twitter. “I called this sh*t out years ago when Abbott was at Hallmark. Glad they dumped him. Being LGBTQ isn’t a ‘trend’. That guy and his network are disgusting. You too Candy. There is nothing untraditional about same-sex couples.”
Bure’s first holiday movie with Great American Family, A Christmas…Present, will debut on Nov. 27
