Katie Holmes Is Unsure How Dawson’s Creek Would Fit In ‘Today’s World’

Katie Holmes is unsure if a Dawson’s Creek reboot would fit into today’s world. During an interview as part of the Kering Women in Motion Talks at Cannes, Holmes told Variety that conversations surrounding a possible reboot had occurred but that she believed that some of the original series’ innocence would be lost if set in the present time. Dawson’s Creek premiered in 1998 and followed a group of friends, portrayed by Holmes, James Van Der Beek, Joshua Jackson, and Michelle Williams, during their teen and young adult years.

“There have been many discussions over the years. We all loved the experience. There’s a protection that comes along with the discussion. The show was a time capsule. To put it into today’s world might tarnish it a little bit. It was right before everyone had a phone and social media and all of that, so there was an innocence that was there between the characters that was one of the things I think people liked about the show. To put it into the setting of today’s world, I’m not sure.” She added: “We’ve often talked about it. For now, we kind of just keeping saying that until there is a real reason to do it, it hasn’t been something where people have said, ‘This is the take on it.'”

When the series began, one of its core characters Pacey Witter (Jackson) was involved in a romantic relationship with a teacher, which led to criticism from parents and television critics. The series garnered mixed reviews through its six-season run, and those who enjoyed it praised its courage in tackling complex topics like death, homosexuality, and mental health issues. Dawson’s Creek concluded in 2003. In 2021, a spark of hope was ignited for fans of the series, as Mary Margaret Humes (who portrayed Dawson’s mother, Gail) shared that she had been in talks with Holmes and Van Der Beek about a possible reboot and that she felt there was a strong possibility it would come to fruition.

Katie Holmes Beyond Dawson’s Creek

United Artists

After portraying Joey Potter through all six seasons of Dawson’s Creek, Holmes continued to grow her career with appearances in movies like Pieces of April, Batman Begins, Thank You for Smoking, Miss Meadows, Dear Dictator, Coda, and series including The Kennedys and Ray Donovan. In 2016, Holmes made her directorial debut with All We Had. Her second directorial feature, Alone Together, followed in 2022. She also appeared in both films.

Her latest project, Rare Objects, premiered in theaters throughout the United States just last month. The film is adapted from a novel by Kathleen Tessaro and chronicles a rape survivor’s struggle to heal from past trauma. The film stars Purva Bedi, Candy Buckley, and Alan Cumming. While Holmes directed and appeared in the movie, it seems her next directorial project will not lead her to any on-screen time as she told Variety: “I’m going to direct a film that I’m just going to direct. And that will be really fun, and I think probably will feel, in some ways, easier.”
