  • Cleo: Ancient Egyptian Dramedy Coming Soon From Jane the Virgin Creator

Jennie Snyder Urman and Jessica Runuck are currently developing the Cleo dramedy for Peacock.

20th Century Studios

Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman has joined forces with Jessica Runuck of Man With a Plan fame to develop a one-hour-long dramedy project titled Cleo at Peacock. The project is set to follow one of history’s most infamous women, the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra. Urman and Runuck have come together on the production alongside Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, TrillTV, and CBS Studios. Runuck is slotted to write the series, with Urman currently designated as a showrunner on the project, according to Deadline.

Cleo is set to share some of the same feminist sensibilities as Urman and Runuck’s wildly popular Jane the Virgin series. Cleo will follow Queen Cleopatra as she struggles to maintain her royal station in Ancient Egypt. To do so, Cleopatra attempts to disguise her intelligence and competence with makeup, fashion, and handsome suitors to garner widespread respect from her subjects. However, the main point that the dramedy hopes to drive home is that not much has changed for women over the last 2,000 years.

Ahead of its release Cleo is set up for success thanks to the highly decorated production team, with Urman holding a Peabody Award for her work on Jane the Virgin and several accolades for her work on Charmed and Emily Ownes M.D. Urman has similarly been celebrated for her screenwriting and production work for series such as 90210, Good Sam, Flowers in the Attic: The Origin, Gilmore Girls, and films like Something Borrowed.

Runuck, on the other hand, has an established relationship with CBS Studios, who produce Cleo for Peacock. Runuck’s screenwriting skills earned her an Emmy nomination for the comedy Man With a Plan. She has similarly worked on wildly successful projects, including Book Club (co-executive producer) and Man Life Crisis (associate producer).

Who Else is Working on Cleo?

NBCUniversal

Urman and Runuck will be joined on the executive producing board for Cleo by Kapital Entertainment’s Brian Morewitz, TrillTV’s Wendi Trilling, Joanna Klien, and Karen Forman. TrillTV and Kaptial Entertainment have a long history of working together, producing a number of series together for CBS, including The Neighborhood, Fam, 9JKL, and The Unicorn.

Cleo will join the flourishing Peacock platform, which has released several hits, including the mystery-of-the-week series Poker Face. The Rian Johnson-led show has seen excellent ratings, as the first four episodes debuted simultaneously on the platform, with audiences commending the performance of leading lady Natasha Lyonne.
