Daytime Emmy Awards Nominations Include Posthumous Nods for Alex Trebek and Larry King

The complete list of Daytime Emmy Awards nominations for 2021 has been revealed by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and it includes posthumous nods for Alex Trebek and Larry King. Set to air June 25 on both CBS and the Paramount+ streaming service, the 48th annual awards show will honor various TV shows and personalities in more than 40 categories.

Trebek is up for Outstanding Game Show Host, and that’s no surprise to anyone. One of the most popular game show hosts of all time, Trebek had been hosting Jeopardy! for decades, winning the Emmy on seven previous occasions (1989, 1990, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2019, and 2020). Though he had been battling pancreatic cancer, Trebek insisted on hosting Jeopardy! for as long as he physically could. He passed away in November at the age of 80 after wrapping up a batch of episodes of the game show shortly before.

As this would potentially give Alex Trebek his third consecutive win for the award, the late Jeopardy! host seems to be the favorite heading into the ceremony. Along with Trebek, the other nominees for the Outstanding Game Show Host award include Wayne Brady, Let’s Make a Deal; Steve Harvey, Family Feud; Alfonso Ribeiro, Catch 21; and Pat Sajak (Wheel of Fortune).

Meanwhile, King has also been nominated for Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host for his Ora TV series Larry King Now. The other nominees for that award are Gloria Estefan, Emily Estefan, and Lili Estafan, Red Table Talk: The Estefans; Tamron Hall, Tamron Hall; Taraji P. Henderson and Tracie Jade, Peace of Mind with Taraji; Rachael Ray, Rachael Ray; Amy Robach, Dr. Jennifer Ashton, and TJ Holmes, GMA3: What You Need to Know; and Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Norris, Red Table Talk.

Larry King hosted different radio and TV shows over the course of his career. For Larry King Now, which he had been hosting since 2012, he was nominated for the Daytime Emmy four times before (2016, 2017, 2018, and 2020). King did win an Emmy for Outstanding Interview/Interviewer in 1999 for Larry King Live and was given the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. The legendary TV host died in January following complications from Covid-19.

The 48th annual Daytime Emmy Awards will air Friday, June 25, and will be available to stream live and on-demand through the streaming service Paramount+. Per Entertainment Weekly, you can check out the list of the more prominent nominees below.
