Denzel Washington won his second Oscar for 2001’s Training Day, where he plays a corrupt police officer. Ever since, he’s been no stranger to the crime genre, playing characters on both sides of the law in movies like Man on Fire, American Gangster, Inside Man, and The Equalizer trilogy.
In January of this year, Washington finished shooting a new crime thriller for Netflix called Here Comes the Flood, which writer Simon Kinberg (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, X-Men: Days of Future Past) called an “unconventional heist movie.” Washington will be joined by a number of other big-name actors, including Robert Pattinson (The Odyssey, Primetime), Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead, Avengers: Endgame), and Daisy Edgar-Jones (Twisters, Sense and Sensibility).
Now, Deadline reports that Here Comes the Flood has a new, more generic title: The Take. “A bank guard, a teller, and a master thief get caught in a deadly game of cons and double crosses,” reads the official description from Netflix. We don’t know who is playing who.
We also don’t know when The Take will be out, except that it’s scheduled for release sometime in 2027. That said, we know that it will be out before another Washington thriller from Amazon MGM Studios, which he is making with Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie. In that movie, Washington will play a former police detective serving a life sentence who is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Granted compassionate release, he returns home to the estranged daughter he left behind and a grandson he didn’t know existed, trying to make amends. The film, which does not yet have a title, will open in theaters on October 1, 2027.
Washington was able to make the thriller with McQuarrie after another movie he was involved in — a biopic about legendary Carthaginian general Hannibal — was put on hold. That movie would have built on Washington’s appearance in 2024’s Gladiator II, another period piece. As for The Take, Netflix has been developing it for a long time. The streamer first acquired the movie in May 2020, when it was rumored that Jason Bateman was going to direct and star in it. At some point, Bateman exited the project, and City of God director Fernando Meirelles came on board.
We’ll keep our ear to the ground for more information. In the meantime, you can stream Denzel Washington’s latest crime drama, 2025’s Highest 2 Lowest, on Apple TV. And the actor has plenty of other fantastic films to keep you occupied while you wait.
