Marvel fans will see a different side of Sue Storm in Avengers: Doomsday, according to Vanessa Kirby. The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduced Marvel’s first family to the MCU — an introduction that came with great reviews and a $460 million box office haul (so far) — with the post-credits scene setting up the family’s continuation into Avengers: Doomsday. The 2026 movie is the MCU’s next big release and is rumored to feature over 60 Marvel heroes, alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. With all those characters in one movie, you wouldn’t think there’d be much room for a sweeping character arc. But, given the dramatic events of First Steps’ final act, Vanessa Kirby promises that Sue Storm’s emotional journey will continue in Doomsday.
WARNING! The following contains major spoilers for The Fantastic Four: First Steps! In an exclusive interview with MovieWeb’s George Edelman to promote her new Netflix movie, Night Always Comes, Vanessa Kirby addressed Sue Storm’s MCU future in Avengers: Doomsday. “I love that I get to continue with Sue because it’s so interesting,” Kirby began. First Steps’ final act saw Sue Storm give her life to defeat Galactus, only to be revived by her infant son, Franklin. According to Vanessa Kirby, Sue Storm won’t just shrug off her death in Avengers: Doomsday, as that key moment will inform the character’s MCU future. She explained:
“I’ve been thinking a lot doing Avengers and stuff about how someone that’s been through, in the space of basically a week, someone who has given birth and has died and come back to life… how a death experience like that would change you.”
Vanessa Kirby even shared with us some of the prep she has undertaken to reprise the role in Avengers: Doomsday. The actress said she’s been researching people who have had real near-death experiences and learning from their experiences to use in her performance. “I’ve been listening to a lot of people that have had those kind of experiences and what they learn, and therefore how different they are after they come back from that.”

Following The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ release, all eyes are now on Avengers: Doomsday to carry the MCU into a new age. The film is the beginning of the end for the divisive Multiverse Saga, with 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars acting as a soft reboot for the long-running cinematic franchise. Doomsday was initially slated for release in May next year. However, its release date has been pushed back several months to December 18.
Production on the film is still ongoing. However, things appear to be moving ahead swiftly as some of the actors have already finished filming their scenes. Alan Cummings, who will reprise their role as Nightcrawler in the film, recently confirmed that they’ve wrapped their character’s scenes. Doomsday’s production doesn’t have an official end date. It has also been confirmed that Marvel Studios will film Doomsday and Secret Wars back-to-back.
