Alien: Earth might be impressing fans and critics who are calling it the best thing to happen to the franchise in years, but it’s now been dethroned as the most popular TV show on IMDb by a nostalgic favorite. Hitting Hulu on Aug. 12, Alien: Earth was quickly lauded for being a surreal and unsettling entry in the series that dared to take chances, so it’s no wonder that it managed to climb to the top of the streaming charts. However, due to the most recent episode of Paramount+ with Showtime’s popular revival series, the Xenomorphs have now sunk to the number two spot thanks to everyone’s favorite vigilante serial killer.
Dexter: Resurrection is now the most popular series on IMDb, swapping places with Alien: Earth to take the crown this week. Of course, that could always change seeing how a new episode of the sci-fi horror series drops today, Sept. 2, but for now, The Bay Harbor Butcher can claim superiority. Released on July 11, 2025, Resurrection has been a huge hit with fans and critics, who have propelled it to a Certified Fresh score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a Popcornmeter score of 87% (which is higher than Alien: Earth’s 71%). The first episode managed to amass 3.1 million global cross-platform viewers within its first three days, which was enough to propel it to becoming Showtime’s most-streamed premiere.
Starring Michael C. Hall as the titular serial killer, Resurrection picks up from where New Blood left off in 2022, explaining how Dexter managed to survive the gunshot wound inflicted upon him by his son, Harrison. Alive and well, he travels to New York to track down his kin, only to find himself lured by a billionaire venture capitalist into a secret society of like-minded individuals. The official synopsis reads:
“Weeks after taking a bullet to the chest from his own son, Dexter Morgan awakens from a coma to find Harrison gone. Realizing the weight of what he put his son through, Dexter sets out for New York City, determined to find him and make things right. But when Miami Metro’s Angel Batista arrives with questions, Dexter realizes his past is catching up to him fast. As father and son navigate their own darkness, they soon find themselves deeper than ever imagined.”
The Latest Episode of ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Made Franchise History
Paramount+ with Showtime
While it’s certainly impressive that Dexter: Resurrection has managed to dethrone Alien: Earth as the most popular TV show on IMDb for the moment, what’s even more shocking is that the latest episode in the revival series, “Touched by an Angel,” is now tied for #1 as the highest-rated episode in the franchise’s history. Currently sitting at 9.8/10, it holds the same rating as “The Getaway,” which was the final episode in Season 4 of the original series that saw Dexter finally capture and kill The Trinity Killer, only to come home and find that his wife, Rita, was Trinity’s last victim.
That’s an impressive feat for a revival series, especially when you consider the poor reception to New Blood just a few years ago. For the franchise to course correct and once again become as popular as it has is a testament to creator Clyde Phillips and everyone involved in bringing it to life. With only one more episode to go, it’ll be interesting to see if “And Justice For All…” manages to be a fitting end to what will hopefully be the first of many seasons to come.
You can catch the final episode of Dexter: Resurrection this Friday, Sept. 5, on Paramount+ with Showtime, and look for the remaining three episodes of Alien: Earth to drop every Tuesday on Hulu until its conclusion on Sept. 23.
