Grey’s Anatomy Has a Chance to Give Blue a Storyline (But Will It Mess Up Again?)

There is no doubt that Grey’s Anatomy has struggled with its storylines, especially those involving the new interns.

Over the last two seasons, there has been a lot of focus on Lucas and Jules, and it’s meant very little development for both Blue and Simone.

I’ve already said that if Grey’s Anatomy can’t figure out what to do with them, then it needs to cut them loose because the actors deserve better.

Well, maybe the series listened to me, because the Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Finale offered up something intriguing for Blue.

After injecting a patient with something that he wasn’t meant to, threatening Bailey’s career, he ended up fired. He tried to fight for his job back, but Webber wasn’t in the mood to listen.

Now the door is open for Blue to prove himself.

Blue Needs to Show that He Belongs in the Hospital

Throughout the season, much of Blue’s storyline focused on his love life, yet again. It’s a problem for the series as a whole, but in this case, it’s gone too far.

We know very little about Blue. He finally realized that plastics was the style he wanted to specialize in, but even then, his arc became all about his relationship with Mohanty.

That character was more likely to cause problems for Jules than for Blue, and it became an underused potential.

We could have seen how Mohanty was using her relationship with Blue to gain something or vice versa.

It would have been great to see how relationships lead to favoritism, which is exactly what happened in the earlier days.

Instead, Blue’s career progression was halted and pretty much forgotten about.

It was only when he ended up on a potential clinical trial with Bailey that things changed, and that’s when he finally showed an ounce of emotion and connection to a patient.

This seemed to mirror Lucas’ arc a little as he formed a connection with Katie.

However, in Blue’s case, there was more of a personal element.

There’s been a shadow of his personal story about his mother drowning in medical debt before, back when he first joined the series, and Maggie took him off a case.

However, Grey’s Anatomy seemed to drop the backstory before it really got into it.

Now, the series has a chance to focus more on that and to really delve into what makes him tick.

Webber may have kicked him out of the hospital, but he’s realized that this is a job that he wants.

He gave a speech to fight for it, and in the past, this would likely have worked on Webber.

However, over the last few years, Webber has hardened, and he’s going to need something more to see that Blue deserves a job in the hospital.

Bailey can see it, and there’s a hint that Catherine can, too, and it’s likely these two women who will help Webber change his mind.

Grey’s Anatomy Risks of Repeating History

Of course, while the show could give Blue a great story as he fights for his job back, there’s a risk of backtracking afterward.

When Blue first brought up that the system forces people into bankruptcy due to medical debt during Grey’s Anatomy Season 19, it was time to delve into who he is as a person.

There was an opportunity to share why he wanted to be a doctor, which helped him connect with more patients, as Lucas and Jules did time and time again.

Grey’s Anatomy even had the opportunity to introduce characters from his personal life.

(Disney/Anne Marie Fox)

Then, throughout Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 and Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, Molly Tran returned.

Blue’s ex-fiancée had left him after an accident caused amnesia, and she turned up in the hospital almost like a twist of fate.

It was another chance to delve into what makes Blue tick and into that rare ability to offer a personal storyline that adds a layer to the character.

Instead, it was wasted, partly due to the large ensemble cast. There simply wasn’t the time to dedicate to Blue’s love for Molly.

So, I fear that Grey’s Anatomy will do the same again.

(Disney/Anne Marie Fox)

As Blue gets his job back, there’s a risk that all the writers will do is bring in another love interest for him, leading everyone to forget the heartfelt, caring man he can be.

Blue needs an arc a lot like Lucas’ from Grey’s Anatomy Season 22. Harry Shum Jr. deserves to shine.

Once Blue is back, his career progression and empathy for patients can’t falter, as he makes it clear that Bailey didn’t make a mistake by lying for him.
