It’s official! Superman: Legacy will still open in theaters on July 11, 2025. Despite the long and exhausting Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes, writer and director James Gunn let the fans know this morning that the first Man of Steel film in the DCU will keep its release date. Gunn made the announcement on X, formerly Twitter. Gunn writes:
“Thanks to the efforts of our talented crew, who never lost faith during the longest strikes in Hollywood history, and who never let their foot off the pedal, continuing to barrel forward, creating the most amazing character and set designs I’ve seen in my entire career, #SupermanLegacy will be making the originally planned release date of July 11, 2025. ❤️🙏”
The WGA strike was resolved back on September 23, and the SAG-AFTRA dispute finally came to an end just two days ago, on November 9. While both strikes stalled a plethora of highly anticipated productions, Gunn and his creative team had already done a significant amount of prep work for Superman: Legacy. And he was able to cast his Clark Kent/Superman (David Corenswet) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) in June, which was less than a month before the SAG-AFTRA strike began.

Superman: Legacy Keeps Its Release Date

While actor Xolo Maridueña’s character Jaime Reyes, aka the Blue Beetle, represents the first original character to appear in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming Detective Comics Universe, the DCU won’t officially begin until Creature Commandos. The animated series and the Max show Waller will reportedly precede writer and director Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, but the buzz continues to swirl around the arrival of the new movie about the Last Son of Krypton. Most recently, just prior to Gunn’s release date confirmation, it was reported that filming on Superman: Legacy begins in March 2024.
Prior to Gunn officially announcing the DCU in January, superhero fans were hanging their hopes on the return of Henry Cavill as Superman in a sequel or spin-off to director Jaume Collet-Serra’s Black Adam. Arguably the most exciting moment of the film came after the fact, when Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) sends Kal-El (Cavill) to deal with Black Adam (Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson) in that captivating post-credits scene. But now, it will be the Moe & Jerryweather alum David Corenswet who will don the Kryptonian’s trademark costume and cape moving forward.
It goes without saying that Corenswet and Cavill bear a resemblance to one another. But Corenswet wants to portray the Man of Steel in a much different light, at least that was the word from the new Superman back in 2019. Yes, nearly four years before Corenswet was even cast to play Clark Kent and his alter ego, the actor described portraying the DC Comics character as his dream job. Corenswet told Entertainment Weekly:
My pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman. I would love to see somebody do an upbeat, throwback [take on Superman]. I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.
