James Gunn Says Information on Second Suicide Squad Spin-Off Coming Soon

As well as a second season of Peacemaker, James Gunn’s second Suicide Squad spin-off series seems to be moving forward.

For James Gunn, his short-term sacking by Disney from his Guardians of the Galaxy directorial role was a strange case of a blessing in disguise. Thanks to Disney “letting him go” for a little while, Gunn was able to get himself on board the DC train as director on The Suicide Squad, and subsequently led to him building a very healthy and seemingly productive relationship with Warner Bros. While all of those issues are now resolved, and Gunn is currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 for Marvel Studios, it looks like his main future lies with Warner Bros. when it comes to the world of superheroes, with his next Suicide Squad spin-off seeming to be moving along quite quickly.

The final episode of Gunn’s Peacemaker series debuted this week, followed swiftly by the announcement that, as the director hoped, there will be a second outing for John Cena’s anti-hero. However, there is another project Gunn had been working on for a little while that is currently lurking in the shadows and would bring a second Suicide Squad spin-off to fruition. Although there is still no word on exactly which of The Suicide Squad’s characters will be involved in this new venture, Gunn has revealed that it shouldn’t be too long before all is revealed. Speaking to Variety, the director said:

“Yeah, that’s advanced a lot. Hopefully, in not too long, people will know more about that. It’s not 100%. But we’ve been working heavily on it. So that would be something that would happen in addition to “Peacemaker” Season 2.”

NBC

James Gunn has previously said that he feels like he has much more freedom working on DC’s R-rated content than he does with Marvel, who are currently strictly PG-13 with their biggest projects and the MCU. For that reason, it looks like Gunn will not only be sticking with DC for a little while but also is keeping his focus on small screen work for at least the next year. He said:

“Yeah, I think I pretty much have decided that after I’m done with “Guardians,” I’m going to be doing television for at least a year. My mind’s made up on that. Not all the shows that we’re dealing with are things that I’m going to be writing and directing, so some of them may take different amounts of my my time. “Peacemaker” is going to be me writing, me directing and spending all my time on set. But other other shows that may not be writing and directing or not directing all the episodes.”

It is clear to see that Gunn is currently in his element, and that is coming across in his work with Peacemaker getting great reviews, as did The Suicide Squad last year. Warner Bros. seems more than happy to give Gunn the power to do pretty much whatever he wants, and as that also seems to be what the fans want, he may find himself staying on for even longer than planned.

Why Rom: Spaceknight May Never Get an MCU Movie According to James Gunn

James Gunn was asked if he would consider writing and directing a Rom: Spaceknight movie, but the director explained why, unless something changes, it isn’t even an option.
