Kevin Feige Reveals Happy Hogan’s MCU Story Almost Went Very Differently

Happy Hogan, Jon Favreau’s character in the MCU, became a helpful character for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, however, things almost went very differently. According to Marvel boss Kevin Feige, Happy almost didn’t survive the events of Iron Man 3.

For those who don’t remember, in Iron Man 3, Happy was severely injured in an explosion outside the TCL Chinese Theatre by one of Aldrich Killian’s (Guy Pearce) henchmen. He still was able to make a full recovery, but the initial script said that he was supposed to die.

In an interview with comicbook.com, Feige and Favreau spoke about what almost happened and why Happy’s fate was altered.

“There was a little difference in the script than the final movie, which was that Happy died,” Feige said. “Jon had a note — that is one of the most important notes he gave us at Marvel — which was, ‘What if Happy was severely injured but did not die?’”

“He’s not lying! It’s true, it’s true,” Favreau added. “They accommodated it, and I’m so happy I’ve been a part of this and being able to be there with Tom Holland since the beginning. He’s such a pleasure to work with, and [Spider-Man director] Jon Watts, who is incredibly talented, it’s just fun to continue this relationship [with Marvel Studios]. It is a big part of my life, and these people are friends and also people I work with.”

Favreau is one of the founding members of the MCU as he directed the first Iron Man, which officially began the crazy, dominant entity that the MCU has become today. If Iron Man hadn’t been as good as it was, who knows how differently things might have gone.

“I’ve said this many times, the MCU would not be what it is without Mr. Favreau at all,” Feige continues. “Obviously Iron Man, obviously everything there, but staying the heart and soul of Happy Hogan is what’s really amazing.”

After Iron Man 3, Happy has now appeared in all three Spider-Man movies and also had a brief appearance in Avengers: Endgame. He tends to have more of a comedic cameo role but it’s always great to see him pop up in any MCU project.

“Since like 2006… it’s been a wonderful collaboration and friendship,” said Favreau. “It’s so great to be part of the Spider-Man trilogy now, as well as the Avengers movies.”

Fans of Happy can see him now in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
