Frankie Muniz has provided a hugely encouraging update on the development of the long-rumored Malcolm in the Middle revival, saying that it is now “the closest it’s ever been.” In an interview with Pedestrian TV, Muniz, who starred as the titular Malcolm throughout all seven seasons of Malcolm in the Middle, cannot believe there is still so much interest in the sitcom’s return, but would love to explore where the characters are all these years later.
“Without giving away too much because there’s nothing confirmed, but it’s the closest it’s ever been to being a reality. If it’s going to happen, it’ll happen soon. But you know, we’ve also been saying that for eight years. The show ended 18 years ago, so it’s crazy that there’s still a lot of interest. I think it’d be a lot of fun to dive into that world and see where everybody is as adults because the possibilities are endless where everybody can be. I’d love to explore it. And I know there are conversations happening.”

The original Malcolm in the Middle follows the exploits of Frankie Muniz as the titular middle child, Malcolm, a somewhat normal teenager who tests at genius level, and his dysfunctional family. Inspired by the life of creator Linwood Boomer, Malcolm in the Middle ran for seven seasons between 2000-2006, and features Muniz’s character alongside his hot-headed, overbearing mother, Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), clumsy, immature father, Hal (Bryan Cranston), and Malcolm’s three anarchic brothers, Francis (Christopher Masterson), Reese (Justin Berfield), and Dewey (Erik Per Sullivan).

Word of a Malcolm in the Middle comeback has been circulating for some time (as long as eight years, as Muniz mentions), with the actor revealing that the delay has largely been due to the cast wanting to get everything exactly right.
“We don’t want to just be one of the many shows that got rebooted over the last couple of years that probably shouldn’t have had a reboot. So if we do it, that’s the biggest thing. We want to make sure it’s good. With an iconic show like we had, you don’t want to taint it. You want to have the same impact for the people who would want to watch it and make sure we make a good product. That’s the most important part, and way more important than just making a show or finally making a movie.”
The series is now considered one of the best sitcoms of all time, and with the emergence of other sequel series’ such as the recent return of Frasier and the long-discussed comeback of King of the Hill, many have wondered when we might see where Malcolm and his family have ended up.
