Marc Jacobs Calls Out LVMH for Doing “The Least Possible” in New Vanity Fair Cover Story

Today Vanity Fair unveiled the style issue with a cover featuring American designer and icon Marc Jacobs as seen through the eyes of painter Anna Weyant. The issue explores how the business of fashion operates in culture and media today, and the personalities fueling it, and includes an extensive interview with Jacobs — the first since LVMH announced the sale of his namesake brand to WHP Global and G-III Apparel Group earlier this year.

Check out a curated selection of our favorite, juicy quotes below:

“All I’ve ever been is a fashion victim,…I don’t think of that as a bad thing.”

“There’s no yes or no,” he says, answering no specific question but musing that there is no singular vision for his brand’s future. “It could be this, it could be that. Where am I now? Where are we now? What do we mean to this generation of people? That generation of people? There’s so many questions.”

“I think there’s enough reasonable doubt that says this kind of interference never goes well,” Jacobs says, acknowledging skepticism about the new deal. “For people who don’t really have all the facts and figures and evidence, I think this just looks like a recipe for something else.”

“LVMH has kept us and done the least possible they can in terms of growing our business,” Jacobs says bluntly, though he doesn’t fault them for it.

“Let’s be honest about what this is,” Jacobs says. His runway collections have “never been commercially successful. We don’t make money on runway. And I doubt anybody really does.”

“I remember the Grindr thing was such a big deal,” he says now, laughing. “I’m like, Yes, I’m a gay designer who likes to have sex. What can I tell you?”

Elsewhere in the issue, Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Robin Givhan considers how MAGA has harnessed fashion to project a particular vision of America, Derek C. Blasberg pens a colorful oral history of Bungalow 8, and Tonne Goodman and photographer Luis Alberto Rodriguez revisit the archetypes of American style for 2026, putting hippies, suits, society swans, and cowboys alongside clean girls, baddies and looksmaxxers.

Vanity Fair will also launch its 2026 Best Dressed List for the first time this decade—an homage to the International Best Dressed List which graced Vanity Fair in the past—downloading the essential insight of who truly excels at putting on clothes, extremely well.

The Style Issue speaks to a range of fashion’s biggest names, from Jordan Roth to John Galliano, and photographs the models (Anok Yai, Kate Moss, Kristen McMenamy, Pat Cleveland), designers (Haider Ackermann, Chemena Kamali), actors (Lee Pace, Aimee Lou Wood, Dree Hemingway) and creatives (Alexa Chung, Gia Coppola, Susie Cave, Daphne Guinness) who are shaping fashion today.

Finally, Vanity Fair’s Features Editor Hillary Busis once again returns with her Nominated for Oblivion column, asking one of the most urgent questions of our age: Is wearable tech ever acceptable?

The style issue is available on newsstands Tuesday August 25th.
