‘Masters of the Universe’ Casts Morena Baccarin, ‘Captain America’ Star in Live-Action Reboot

The Masters of the Universe cast grows more impressive with each announcement, and now two MCU actors have joined the ensemble. Based on the popular toy line and animated series of the same name, Masters of the Universe will be directed by Travis Knight (Bumblebee), and is set to be a major theatrical fantasy epic for Amazon MGM Studios, which has set a June 2026 release date. Work on a new Masters of the Universe film stretches as far back as 2007, and after nearly 20 years in development, it looks to be approaching reality as two new stars have joined the movie.

Deadline reports that Morena Baccarin has been cast as the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull, and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson has landed the role of Malcolm, a.k.a. Fisto. Morena Baccarin is best known for playing Vanessa in three Deadpool films and having roles on hit television series like Firefly and Gotham. The Sorceress of Castle Grayskull is a powerful magic user and mother of the character Teela. Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Davis Lawfers / Copperhead, a member of the Serpent Society in Captain America: Brave New World. His other credits include Game of Thrones, Vikings: Valhalla, and Succession. His character, Fisto, was originally an antagonist of He-Man before becoming a powerful ally.

Baccarin and Jóhannesson join an already stacked Masters of the Universe cast headlined by Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You) as Prince Adam / He-Man and Camila Mendes (Riverdale) as the brave warrior Teela. Idris Elba (The Suicide Squad) will play Man at Arms, Teela’s adopted father and loyal ally to He-Man. The villains roster includes Jared Leto (Morbius) as the iconic villain Skeletor, while Alison Brie (Community) is set to play dark magic user Evil-Lyn. Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, best known for playing The Mountain in five seasons of Game of Thrones, is signed on as the antagonist known as Goat Man.

He-Man’s Long Road Back to the Big Screen

No plot details on Masters of the Universe have been released, and it will likely be some time until fans get a first look at the movie. A recent plot rumor suggests the film might follow some similar beats to the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie, which many fans understandably hope is not true. While the new Masters of the Universe is pulling a lot of beloved elements from the franchise’s history, there is still no word on whether fan-favorite characters like Orko or Moss Man will appear in the film. Given how long a new Masters of the Universe was in development, and the various pitches it took to crack the story, it’s both exciting and daunting to imagine which storyline finally made the upcoming film click into place.

Masters of the Universe used to be one of the most profitable and beloved toylines during the 1980s, but unlike Transformers or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it has struggled to find relevance in the new millennium. But in the 2010s, Netflix made a lot of moves to revamp the brand, thanks to She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Kevin Smith’s adult-oriented sequel series Masters of the Universe: Revelations and Revolutions, and the CGI-animated kids series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. This big-budget feature film is looking to do for Masters of the Universe what Michael Bay’s first Transformers movie did for that franchise. Between the eclectic cast and director Travis Knight’s track record with movies like Bumblebee and Kubo and the Two Strings, Masters of the Universe is already a movie worth watching.
