There are two types of “creature feature” in the world, bad and so bad they are good. That may be a little harsh, but often proves to be accurate, and that is what makes movies about giant sharks and cheaply constructed aliens such a big draw for audiences. Hollywood may feel like everything needs to have mega-budget CGI effects, but sometimes a guy in a suit or a cheap computer-generated monster can be just as entertaining.
For that reason, the Hulu chart is currently being dominated by The Bayou, a horror movie that tapped into the idea of drug-fueled animals going on a bloody rampage, a trend that was sparked by the success of Cocaine Bear. Although the movie appears under the less obvious title of The Bayou, it is also known as the much more in your face Gator Creek. While the title change could be a way of hiding the reptilian subject of the film, having a huge croc on your poster does not really scream mystery.
Regardless of what you call it, The Bayou was originally released in early 2025 on VOD services, but without much fanfare behind it, the movie gained little attention. However, when added to streaming on Hulu (and Disney+ in some countries), the promise of a schlocky croc flick is just too much to resist, and the film is now at the top of the chart. For those who need to know more, the synopsis of the movie reads:
“Vacation turns disaster when Kyle and her friends escape a plane crash in the desolate Louisiana everglades, only to discover there’s something more dangerous lurking in the shallows.”
‘The Bayou’ Was Not Made for Critics…or Most Audiences

Audiences love a bad movie with a giant creature. It’s an unavoidable fact. However, while The Bayou has a Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter score of 64%, that doesn’t mean it earned the rating. In fact, the reviews of the movie make you question whether Rotten Tomatoes’ internal calculation has been made under the influence, as it does not correspond with the majority of comments highlighting “horrible acting,” “a terrible CGI mess,” and a film that is “pretty low on everything.”
The biggest problem with The Bayou is that the same story has recently been told in much more entertaining ways. Several reviews cite 2023 smash Cocaine Bear and 2019’s Crawl as two examples that turn nature nasty which are worth your time more than The Bayou. The film does not get any more positivity from critics, with many calling it an “incoherent mess” and “even as a joke, this is a pitiful production.”
So why is The Bayou a hit on Hulu? Viewers have paid for a subscription so they will mostly be happy to click on whatever is fed to them on banner rolls and curated selections of titles put in front of them on the streamer’s home page. Although The Bayou is currently chomping up the competition on the streaming chart, it will no doubt sink into the murky depths very quickly.
