Kathleen Kennedy wants to explore new characters and new worlds in the Star Wars universe and the original Lando Calrissian supports the decision.
Star Wars star Billy Dee Williams agrees with Kathleen Kennedy that the time has come to explore new territory in the franchise. Recently, Kennedy explained that the future of Star Wars movies will be in exploring all-new characters and worlds, leaving the Skywalker Saga and all of its associated storylines behind. She also said Lucasfilm wouldn’t be recasting legacy characters with younger actors in the roles again either after Solo: A Star Wars Story underperformed at the box office.
Perhaps that means Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and others won’t be back on the big screen anytime soon, but for Williams, that may be for the best. Per TMZ, the Lando Calrissian actor spoke about Kennedy’s comments and the plans for the Star Wars films to create new storylines from scratch with original characters. Williams explains that nothing lasts forever, and after several decades spent with these beloved characters fans know and love, it might be time to put them to bed so the franchise can further spread its wings.

“I don’t care. No, why should I care? Well, (the fans) got all those other movies to look at. I don’t know. There comes a moment in life, when, you know, things exist, and then they expire. Nothing lasts forever, that’s for sure.”
To the fans who are upset that Darth Vader and other fan favorites may be left in the past, Williams had this to add.
“You’ll get over it.”

Billy Dee Williams Might Be Right
Longtime Star Wars fans love classic characters, as seen by the popularity of the new series Obi-Wan Kenobi. But it’s worth noting that fans will also embrace new content with original characters if the writing is still of high quality. The Mandalorian has proven to be a breakout success when it debuted on Disney+, and many fans have stated that they appreciate the series more than the recent Star Wars films. With its continued success, The Mandalorian has a third season in the works.
There may also still be a place for certain characters on the small screen. While Kathleen Kennedy has said Lucasfilm will move on from recasting classic characters, she also says she hasn’t completely ruled out a Lando series for Disney+ with Donald Glover reprising the role. Glover had previously taken over the role from Williams for the film Solo: A Star Wars Story. Kennedy explained to GamesRadar:
“I never say never. It’s certainly not something that we’re doing with any intention right now. We’re still talking about Lando with Donald Glover, for instance, but I don’t think we would intentionally just look back at some of the characters like Luke and Leia and whatnot and decide arbitrarily to do a story. There would have to be a really strong reason why.”
In any case, there will be no shortage of Star Wars content coming in the future, both on the big and small screens, regardless of who will be featured in the main roles.
