Brie Larson has come in for a fair amount of online trolling for her role as Captain Marvel, but the actress recently revealed that one of her biggest fears in joining the MCU was that she might not be able to keep up with the physically demanding needs of the franchise. Making her debut in 2019, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel divided audience opinions but delivered a mighty $1 billion-plus box office and mostly positive critical reviews, and it gave Larson the confidence that she was doing something right.
Captain Marvel was first teased in the post-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War, when Nick Fury managed to send a pager message to the cosmic heroine just before he was dusted in The Blip. Her solo movie delivered an origin story of Carol Danvers as she became Captain Marvel, which has then led her into Avengers: Endgame and beyond. Now, with The Marvels arriving next year to team Danvers up with Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, Larson has revealed to Jimmy Kimmel that she was very uncertain about taking on the role, but it has changed her in many ways.

“Pure fear [of] failure. I thought that I was like supposed to do my own stunts. They casted me and I was like, “They low-key don’t understand that I’m an introvert with asthma, like, they made a mistake… I got to figure this out real quick.” So I started training, and I learned that I was actually much stronger than I realized, and that my allergies were what was causing my asthma. So, I just took allergy medicine. And I could lift heavy weights and it really transformed my life. And Captain Marvel changed me as a person way more than I ever [would’ve thought].”

With the onset of Covid lockdowns, Brie Larson took to YouTube to connect with her fans and help get herself through the pandemic, sharing personal messages, tours of her home and favorite things, and several fitness and wellbeing routines. When the time came to return to filming, Larson continued to share videos detailing the physical workouts that were required to get in shape to play Captain Marvel once again.
In one of her earliest videos, shared in August 2020, the actress hinted that she really doesn’t have much time for online trolls and those who are quick to bring negativity to her work, commenting, “It’s unclear if anyone’s actually going to do this workout along with us or just enjoy watching me struggle. Please like the video. If you liked it, if you didn’t like it, keep your comments to yourself.”
Captain Marvel was hit by many troll comments on its 2019 debut, but they failed to cause any noticeable damage to the movie’s box office performance. With a number of recent Marvel projects suffering the same issues, it is likely that Larson and the rest of The Marvels team are already preparing for similar backlash when the movie hits cinemas next summer.
