Patrick Wilson is the latest actor to join the upcoming Cape Fear remake. Wilson, whose addition was reported by Variety, joins previously announced cast members Amy Adams and Javier Bardem. Apple TV+’s screen adaptation will mark the third, following the classic J. Lee Thompson film from 1962 and Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake, both of which were based on the 1957 novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald. This version, however, will be the first time the story is explored episodically.
The 10-episode series’ official logline reads:
A storm is coming for happily married attorneys Anna (Adams) and Tom Bowden when Max Cady (Bardem), a notorious killer from their past, gets out of prison.
Scorsese famously directed the 1990s remake, which starred Robert De Niro as convicted rapist Max Cady, who seeks revenge against his former public defender, Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte), whom he blames for his 14-year imprisonment. The film also starred Jessica Lange, Juliette Lewis, and Joe Don Baker, with Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, who starred in the original 1962 Cape Fear, making cameo appearances. De Niro and Lewis (who portrayed Sam’s teen daughter Danielle Bowden) both earned critical acclaim and Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for their work on the feature.
Scorsese returns for Apple TV+’s upcoming series, where he’ll executive produce alongside fellow Hollywood icon Steven Spielberg.

Apple TV+ describes Cape Fear as a “tense, Hitchcockian thriller exploring America’s true crime obsession in the 21st century,” hinting at the very horror elements where Wilson shines. This makes him an exciting addition to the already impressive cast. While we know Adams will portray attorney Bowden and Bardem will star as the intimidating Max Cady, Wilson’s role has not been announced (we’re hoping to see him as Amanda’s husband, Steve Bowden). We’re particularly excited to watch Bardem in another villainous role, following his remarkable efforts as the terrifying Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men and Raoul Silva in Skyfall.
A premiere date for the Cape Fear series has not been released by Apple TV+. Spielberg is executive producing with Daryl Frank and Justin Falvey for Amblin Television, along with Alex Hedlund and Nick Antosca for Eat the Cat, and Scorsese and Bardem. Antosca, best known for his work on Channel Zero, The Act, Brand New Cherry Flavor, and A Friend of the Family, serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer for Cape Fear.
