Hugh Jackman Does ‘Something Completely New’ with Wolverine in Deadpool 3

Ryan Reynolds says Deadpool 3 is a big “divergence” from the X-Men movies, giving Hugh Jackman something new to do with the character.

While Hugh Jackman spent nearly two decades in the role of Wolverine, his upcoming return to the role won’t be like anything fans have previously seen from that incarnation of the character. Jackman first debuted as Wolverine in the original live-action X-Men film released in 2000. He wrapped up his run in the role, or so he thought at the time, with the 2017 film Logan. The movie ends the character’s story in a rather conclusive way, but his return in Deadpool 3 has been explained with Ryan Reynolds confirming that the threequel is set before Logan, so it won’t be taking anything away from that film’s ending.

Now, Reynolds is further teasing Jackman’s return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3. Speaking with ET Canada (per Variety), Reynolds looked back on how long it took to finally get this dream project made, feeling happy that it’s happening at what he says is the “perfect time.” He also wants to reassure fans that Jackman’s return to the role won’t throw a damper on Logan or the previous X-Menmovies to feature the actor in the role, as Deadpool 3 does something entirely different with Wolverine, an aspect that has Jackman feeling very excited. As Reynolds explains:

“We’ve wanted to this this for decades…it’s weirdly the perfect time. I never stopped [trying to get him to come back as Wolverine]. I was just pestering him like a gnat over the last many years. I believe in timing, as much as hard work and luck and all those intersections that are supposed to meet. Timing’s the big one. I think he was ready. I think he was excited. And what we pitched him was enough of a divergence from the character that he knows and the character that he’s left behind, that it gives him something completely new to play and something that he’s really excited to do.”
