DC fans have every reason to be hopeful about 2025. After many chaotic years, the franchise seems to be shaping up for the better. While it was sad to see a great show like Superman & Lois ending, the path is being cleared for even bigger vehicles. The trailer for James Gunn’s Superman Legacy promises good things, while Creature Commandos’ great reception proves the DC Studios boss knows what he is doing.
Interestingly, Gunn seems to be inheriting a few things from the ‘previous administration.’ Peacemaker will be returning for Season 2, despite it initially being a part of the DCEU. Gunn has explained that he will be doing a soft reboot of the show, making it part of the DCU. Previously, he had stated that everything that’s not a part of the DCU is considered an Elseworlds story. This includes Matt Reeves’ Batman universe.
It’s a risky move, especially if the inherited productions turn out better than the recently conceived ones. But we won’t be pessimistic. Here is what’s coming in 2025.

‘Harley Quinn’ (Season 5)
January 16, 2025
Harley Quinn is undoubtedly the best DC animated show since Batman: The Animated Series and no one is taking it away from fans just yet. Season 4 ended on a high note, with Harley developing a conscience and refusing to kill the Joker for paralyzing Batgirl. She also formed the supergroup The Gotham City Sirens with Barbara and Catwoman.

2025 sure seems like it will be another great year for Superman fans as the market continues to be flooded with stories about the superhero. A recent Season 5 trailer reveals that Harley and Poison Ivy have relocated to Metropolis. This means they’ll get to interact more with Superman than with Batman. After all, the Kryptonian had just regained his powers in the previous season.
It’s a great direction since Harley has been dealing with the Joker for far too long. A new environment will keep the show exciting.’

‘Batman Ninja vs Yakuza League’
March 2025
Directed by Junpei Mizusaki and Shinji Takagi, and written by Kazuki Nakashima (best known for the anime, Getter Robo), Batman Ninja vs Yakuza League picks up where Batman Ninja left off. After returning from the past, Batman and the members of the Bat-family find a world that has changed immensely. Japan no longer exists and neither do any members of the Justice League. There is now the villainous Yakuza League.
Batman Is Up for Another Great Adventure
If Batman Ninja vs Yakuza League is anything like Batman Ninja, fans are in for a treat. Warner Bros.’s decision to grant carte blanche to visionary Japanese writers, actors, directors, and animators paid off, and the second installment should be even better, given the talented and experienced minds on board. On top of that, there is the undeniable fact that DC animated productions rarely fail to impress.

‘Superman’
July 2025
Much of Superman’s plot remains a secret to the majority of the populace, just like the Man of Steel’s civilian identity. Only DC insiders know for sure, but James Gunn has given a few hints, revealing that this is no origin story and the Kryptonian will be attempting to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human side. The film is set to be the first installment of the DCU’s “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.” But will it avoid Man of Steel’s mistakes?

There is no room for failure with Superman: Legacy. The upcoming DC film is already under a lot of scrutiny, with fans and critics having plenty to say about the costume, the cinematography, and the character’s sulky face, as judged from the trailer. Gunn will feel compelled to prove all detractors wrong, especially those from the “Henry Cavill is the only Superman” camp.
Did the world need another Superman production so soon? Certainly not! There has been an oversupply over the past few years. Why not make the hero as scarce as Batman? Most importantly, Superman & Lois told a perfect Man of Steel story. There is no urgency to introduce the world to another Superman only a few months after the show’s finale. Perhaps James Gunn’s biggest dream was to make a Superman movie, so he had to start with that. And he’s the boss, so we’ll let him have his way.

‘Peacemaker’ (Season 2)
August 2025
In the first season of Peacemaker, John Cena’s jingoistic titular character and black ops squad “Project Butterfly.” helped save the world from parasitic aliens that had taken over the world. The show was part of the DCEU, but reports suggest that Peacemaker might be making a jump from that doomed universe to the current one, so it will be interesting to see how that happens. It shouldn’t be hard to execute, given how beautifully Superman’s retcon in the Arrowverse was handled.

The first season of Peacemaker was a huge hit. The show, alongside The Suicide Squad, convinced the Warner Bros. board that James Gunn was good enough to head the newly formed DC Studios. Fans can now hope that the magic will continue.
Fingers remain crossed, considering that Gunn will only be directing three episodes this time, because of his busy schedule. The good thing is that he wrote every episode, so his vision will remain.

‘The Sandman’ (Season 2)
Undisclosed 2025 Date
Efforts to adapt The Sandman began as early as 1991 but flailed in development hell for years. A film almost came close to being made in the early 2010s, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt tapped to star, only to exit over creative differences in 2016. Warner Bros. then shifted its focus to television and made a deal with Netflix. Comic fans thus got to see Morpheus attempting to restore order in his realm, The Dreaming. Now a second season is on the way.

Season 2 is set to be slightly longer, consisting of 12 seasons (Season 1 had eleven), so fans can brace themselves for a grander adventure. Reports suggest that this will be the final season, though no one should take that as the final word, since things change very quickly when success happens. After all, The Penguin was initially planned as a miniseries, but a second season is now being discussed.

‘Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires’ (Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios)
Undisclosed 2025 Date
Jointly produced by Ánima (a Mexican animation studio) and Warner Bros. Animation, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires follows Yohualli Coatl (Horacio García Rojas), a young Aztec boy whose father is murdered by Spanish conquistadors led by Hernán Cortés (a real historical character). Coatl soon becomes the superhero known as Batman, and dedicates his life to protecting his home from Cortes and also avenge the death of his father.
An Amalgamation of Fiction and History
The animated film is directed by Juan Jose Meza-Leon, who previously directed episodes of Harley Quinn and other great animated TV shows, so quality is guaranteed. Even though there are numerous Batman Elseworlds comics yet to be adapted into movies, it’s nice to see film writers getting creative. The story feels a lot like Zorro, but we trust that there will be enough franchise-exclusive information to differentiate the two productions.
