The highly anticipated remake of the 80s action movie Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor has finally been given a release date, with the Amazon Prime Video project now all set to debut on March 21, 2024. This release date comes following reports that, despite the Road House remake scoring well with test audiences, and despite Gyllenhaal and director Doug Liman pushing for a theatrical release, Amazon Studios instead decided to opt for a streaming premiere.

The release date reveal (which comes courtesy of The Playlist) also comes following reports of chaos behind the scenes at Amazon, with renowned producer Joel Silver reportedly being fired for “berating” the Head of Theatrical and Streaming Film for Amazon, Courtenay Valenti. Silver’s lawyer has since released a statement, which you can read below:

“As Amazon readily admits, Joel Silver completed all of his services on Road House and was not relieved of his duties, terminated or fired from his services on Road House. He finished the film and did an excellent job. With respect to ‘Play Dirty,’ as agreed to by Amazon, Joel was in no way terminated with or for cause on that picture. None of this is in dispute. To say he was fired is irresponsible and defamatory.”

Director Doug Liman and star Jake Gyllenhaal will not shy away from the brutality and blood that comes with being a “cooler” at a roadside bar, as the upcoming Road House remake has now officially been given an R rating. According to FilmRatings.com, the reboot of Road House has been given the rating due to “violence throughout, pervasive language and some nudity,” meaning that the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal and UFC fighter Conor McGregor will be demonstrating just how savage the work of a bouncer can be.

The 1989 classic Road House will have a new version with Jake Gyllenhaal and UFC fighter Conor McGregor as its main stars. The film, directed by Doug Liman, who was in charge of The Bourne Identity, has already begun shooting, and both stars are ready for action. In the film, Gyllenhaal will play a former UFC fighter who takes the job of a bouncer at a bar in Florida. Therefore, the actor had to get back into shape, similar to how he did for Southpaw, where he played a boxer. And he seems to be doing very well with the training.

Meanwhile, the talented Gyllenhaal has received praise from his Road House co-star Jessica Williams. “It was so cool working with him,” she said earlier this year. “He’s an amazing actor. I was so excited to do ‘Road House’ with Jake Gyllenhaal. He’s an insane actor. Every time, you’re learning. My job as an actor, especially on ‘Shrinking,’ is to make everyone look good by knowing what the hell I’m doing on set. I love volleying, and I got to do that with Jake.”

The Story of Road House

During filming, Gyllenhaal and McGregor crashed the UFC 285 weigh-in at T-Mobile Arena. Gyllenhaal stood face to face with former UFC fighter Jay Heiron and slapped him in the face before the pair were split up:

For McGregor, this will mark his debut as an actor, joining some other famous fighters (WWE), such as Dwayne Johnson, John Cena, and Dave Bautista, who all have become big movie stars after retiring from the ring. They’ll be joined by Billy Magnussen (No Time to Die), Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad), Gbemisola Ikumelo (A League of Their Own), Lukas Gage (The White Lotus), Hannah Love Lanier (A Black Lady Sketch Show), Travis Van Winkle (You), B.K. Cannon (Why Women Kill), Arturo Castro (Broad City), Dominique Columbus (Ray Donovan), Beau Knapp (Seven Seconds), and Bob Menery (Billions).

In the original film, Dalton (Patrick Swayze) is a Ph.D. but works as a nightclub security guard in a New York bar, as the job is highly paid. One day he is offered a job at a hostess bar in Jasper, Missouri, so he accepts the position with the intention of cleaning up the local thugs. However, when he arrives, he is introduced to Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara), the most powerful and influential person in town.

On his first night on the job, he gets two employees fired for dealing drugs. The first is Pat, a waiter who is also Wesley’s nephew, and the second, Morgan, is one of the local doormen. Unfortunately, Dalton has just gotten into a lot of trouble as these criminals, supported by the dangerous Wesley and his gang, will take revenge on the protagonist.

Road House is now considered a classic 80s outing, and no doubt audiences cannot wait to see how Gyllenhaal fares in the remake.
