It’s been a long time coming for the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie to get made but Jason Blum hasn’t given up on the project just yet.

Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria will be opening its doors at some point in the future as Jason Blum wants to assure Five Nights at Freddy’s fans that the movie adaptation is still very much in development. At this point, you really can’t blame fans for feeling skeptical about the film ever seeing the light of day. It’s now been in development for several years, currently with Blumhouse set to take on the film, but the lack of major updates has gotten many to presume the adaptation must have been canceled.
Blum recently took to Twitter to clarify that the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie is still happening, even if progress has been very slow. When one fan directly asked Blum how the movie was coming along, the producer responded, “It really is still coming. I promise, guys.”

Previously, Chris Columbus was set to direct Five Night’s at Freddy’s, though Blum has since stated that the director is no longer involved. Speaking with Collider, Blum also spoke about how tough it was to “crack” getting a version of the script that was solid enough for Scott Cawthon, the game’s creator, to give the film the green light. One of the conditions in getting this film made is that Cawthon needs to approve the story.
“It’s really tough to crack,” Jason Blum said. “We’ve written multiple scripts, and we’ve got where we’re threading a needle, which is doing justice to Five Nights at Freddy’ s and making Scott (Cawthon) happy. The only way that we would go about it is giving Scott … I don’t want to do something that Scott doesn’t like. Let me say that a different way. I don’t have the right to do anything Scott doesn’t like. Basically, Scott has kind of like the equivalent of ‘final cut’ and it’s taken longer than I hoped to get the right story.”

Meanwhile, Other Killer Animatronic Movies Are Getting Released
Warner Bros.
The Five Nights at Freddy’s video game is set after closing time in a Chuck E. Cheese-style fun center for children. It is populated by animatronics that come to life at night and roam the grounds, and to survive, the night shift worker must stay hidden out of sight in the security office. Basically, the simple concept imagines what would happen if those cute animatronic animals tried to kill people at night.
We are still waiting on the Freddy’s film, but the success of the games has inspired other movies. Warner Bros. revived the classic show The Banana Splits with a 2019 movie that depicted the characters as sentient and murderous, similar to Five Nights at Freddy’s. Meanwhile, Nicolas Cage starred in the horror film Willy’s Wonderland which follows the actor as a drifter working at an abandoned family entertainment center haunted by eight animatronics.
Even so, many Five Nights at Freddy’s fans are most eager to see that film make its way to theaters. Blum’s latest update is a good sign, but let’s hope some real traction can start happening soon.
