Friday the 13th Franchise Heads to Max in Time for Halloween

Summary

  • Max is adding most of the Friday the 13th franchise to its lineup, perfect for fans who want to have a spooky Halloween marathon.
  • While the first eight films will be available on Max, fans will have to look elsewhere to watch the last three movies in the series.
  • Other horror films like Carrie, The Exorcist, and the It movies will also be available on Max, giving horror fans plenty of options for Halloween viewing.

Max is kicking off the spooky season with numerous horror additions. Jason Voorhees fans can rejoice as most of the Friday the 13th franchise is included in the list of Max’s fall arrivals. Eight of the original ten films will arrive at the streaming platform, joining Jason Goes to Hell, which has already been available on Max.

The first eight franchise films Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th Part II, Friday the 13th Part III, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood and Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan will be available this Friday, September 1 (via ComicBook.com). Meaning they will be available in time for a Friday the 13th Halloween marathon.

Should you want to enjoy the film franchise in its entirety, you’ll have to venture out of Max for the last three films. Jason X (the one where our masked killer is cryogenically frozen and then taken to space) is available to rent on other platforms along with the crossover film Freddy vs. Jason and the 2009 reboot Friday the 13th.

Other beloved horror films joining the streamer next month include Brian De Palma’s Carrie, William Freidkin’s The Exorcist, Doctor Sleep, It and It: Chapter Two. So horror fans will have plenty of choice when it comes to what to watch on All-Hallows Eve.

Will Jason Voorhees Ever Return?

Warner Bros. Pictures.

Horror lovers have been patiently waiting for a new addition to the Jason Voorhees storyline, but a legal battle between the original film’s director Sean S. Cunningham and writer Victor Miller has prevented a new movie from coming to fruition. In January, however, it was reported that Cunningham is working on a reboot to Friday the 13th with writer Jeff Locker and director Jeremy Weiss.

While the three were collaborating on the horror flick The Night Driver, Locker discussed his vision of a “dream reboot” with Cunningham:

“Sean hired me to do a rewrite on The Night Driver and after working closely with director Jeremy Weiss and him on that, we naturally got to talking about Friday the 13th and House. Jeremy and I pitched our dream reboot of Friday the 13th – with Sean’s blessing to keep developing it with him.” he said. “Obviously, the prequel TV series has reignited interest about a new film so we’re hoping the surrounding excitement will inspire both sides to come together and give us Jason on the big screen again for the first time in 14 years, but we also have a Plan B for a sequel to the original we think fans will absolutely love and should avoid any legal entanglements.”

That new prequel series, Crystal Lake, will land on another platform in the future, with Hannibal’s Brian Fuller working alongside A24 to bring the prequel to Peacock. Fuller writes and creates Crystal Lake alongside Stephen Dodson (An Angry Man), who also serves as a director and executive producer. Adrienne King, who starred in the first film and made a small appearance during the sequel, will appear in the upcoming series in a recurring role; other cast details are currently unknown.

According to its official logline, Crystal Lake “follows a doomed small town where camp counselors come to die.”
