Maybe Paul Feig will be sleeping a little easier tonight knowing his reboot won’t be excluded from the Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection box set. Recently, it was announced that a new box set was arriving in February featuring Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, and even the newest movie, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Feig was unhappy that the 2016 reboot, retroactively dubbed Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, was seemingly omitted, and he let Sony hear about it on Twitter.
“Um … Sony Pictures, I know this must be a mistake,” Feig wrote. “We do have a lot of fans and Bill, Dan and Ernie were in it and it won the Kids Choice Award for Best Feature Film the year it came out. So, I guess this was just an oversight?”

As it turns out, the 2016 reboot is not going to be left out of the Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection. The 8-disc set features the original two films along with Afterlife 4K Ultra HD & Blu-ray and two discs of special features. Per the press release, this includes “over 20 hours of rare behind-the-scenes and must-see archival gems, including the full Preview Cut of the original movie and much, much more!” The box set is presented in collectible “ghost trap” packaging with lights, and includes a full 220-page reprint of the rare 1985 “Making GHOSTBUSTERS” book.
It’s casually mentioned in the press release that the box set “also includes digital versions of Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” This means that while Answer the Call doesn’t have its own disc in the set, it still comes with the Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection, albeit as the digital version. In any case, this will allow fans to watch every movie in the series if they get the box set, even if the 2016 reboot features a standalone story unconnected to the other three movies.
According to Ghostbusters News, the inclusion of Ghostbusters: Answer the Call is not directly related to Paul Feig’s tweet. Reportedly, the plan was to always include all four films digitally, and that information just hadn’t made its way to Feig. Now that the special features for the set have been revealed, which includes the digital version of Answer the Call, all appears to be right with the situation. Except, of course, for the collectors who were hoping to get another disc with the 2016 film along with its own bonuses.
The Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection will be available to purchase on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on Feb. 1, 2022. If you’re just looking to check out the new film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be available to own on the same formats on that day as well. The new movie has been widely praised by fans with many considering it to be the legacy sequel they’d been waiting a long time for. Ernie Hudson has theorized that one big reason fans were harsh on the 2016 movie is that it was set in a standalone universe with no real connections to the previous movies. Even so, Answer the Call still has a following of its own, so it’s good to see its inclusion in some form.
