Hugh Jackman, who says he prefers to think of the film as Wolverine 10, opened up on his upcoming return in Deadpool 3.

In the upcoming sequel Deadpool 3, Ryan Reynolds will bring in Hugh Jackman for the latter’s tenth film in the role of Logan, aka Wolverine. When the news was first announced, it came as a big surprise, given that the Logan character met a definitive ending when he was killed off in 2017’s Logan. Jackman had also said he was finished with the role, and as the years passed, that really seemed to be the case.
Speaking about his return to the role in an interview with Chris Wallace for CNN, Jackman opened up on his upcoming return. He addressed how the character can appear in Deadpool 3 by clarifying that the film takes place before the events of Logan, so this doesn’t impact the events of that movie or the character’s eventual demise.

As the actor says in the interview:
“I mean, you’ve categorized it as a Deadpool movie. We like to call it Wolverine 10 in our house. Basically, this is taking place… the story is pre-Logan. Which is, exactly as you said, where Logan died. So, we pre that in the storyline.”
Jackman then explained why exactly he chose to return to the role after previously walking away from it. The actor genuinely felt like he was finished with playing the character after Logan, but after years of others asking him to return to the part, Jackman finally was intrigued when he realized how interesting it would be to explore the relationship between the rivals Deadpool and Wolverine.
“I really thought I was done. Like, I was at peace with it. I got asked every day, either in interviews, or Ryan Reynolds ringing me, ‘Can we do it again?’ I’m like, ‘No, I’m done.’ Someone said to me, I think it was Deb, she’s my wife, she said, ‘You know, after this, what is it you really wanna do?’ And I was just driving down a day later and I thought, ‘What do I want?’ And it came to me like that, because when I keep thinking of me and Ryan and Deadpool and Wolverine, which are classic comic book rivals, there’s also a dynamic that I’ve never really got to do before as Wolverine.”

20th Century Fox
Jackman also commented on what it will take to get back into character for Deadpool 3. He says that his plan is to devote six entire months to just training so he can be in peak physical shape when it comes time to start filming the movie.
“I’m not doing any other work. I’m gonna be with my family and train. That’s going to be my job for six months. And, I’m really fit right now.”
It’s exciting for fans to see Wolverine and Deadpool sharing the screen, but there will be a bit of a wait before the film arrives. Deadpool 3 will be released in movie theaters on Nov. 8, 2024.
