Idina Menzel just confirmed that she will be back in Frozen 3 and lend her voice to the film series’ well-loved ice queen, Elsa. While the celebrated actress confirmed her return, she can’t share much as currently she has limited knowledge of the film. During her interview with Billboard, she claimed that the movie’s storyline and character details are still a mystery even to her.
The Frozen franchise began in 2013, releasing the phenomenal success that the first Frozen, making $1.28 billion in box office. It was followed Frozen 2 after six years in 2019. The sophomore even outdid the predecessor with $1.45 billion worldwide earnings, holding the record of highest grossing animated movie of all time to this day. With the announcement of the third movie in the franchise, it’s easy to why it was met with eager anticipation and excitement from fans across the world.

While specific plot details of Frozen 3 are yet to be disclosed, insights from the previous film might hint at what lies ahead. Frozen 2 primarily revolved around Elsa’s journey to understand the origins of her magical abilities. As the narrative unfolded, Elsa discovered that she is the embodiment of the fifth spirit of nature, capable of controlling the other four elements: earth, air, wind, and fire. The revelation made a significant impact to the storyline. It made Elsa a force to reckon with and at the same time further added mystical undertones to her character.

Frozen 2 ended with an Elsa that is more self-assured and confident with her role in the world she lives in. With her powers and their implications no longer a mystery, Elsa’s character arc hinted at the possibility of the third installment delving deeper into the world’s mythology. Notably, the “secret siren,” the voice that guided Elsa to her truth in Frozen 2, still remains an enigma, opening the door for further exploration in the upcoming film.
Simultaneously, the sequel saw significant developments in the life of Anna, Elsa’s sister. Anna ascended to the throne of Arendelle, choosing to live separately from Elsa, who preferred the solitude of the forest. Her newfound status as Queen inevitably presents a slew of responsibilities and challenges, aspects that could be further explored in Frozen 3. Moreover, while Frozen 2 did not feature a central antagonist, it did repeatedly reference Prince Hans from the first film. This could signify a potential return on the franchise’s third installment, posing a serious threat to Queen Anna, Elsa and the whole of Arendelle kingdom.
As many details are being kept under wraps about Frozen 3, the only thing we are sure of is the fans and critics’ eager anticipation for its release.
